Description:
The purpose of the project is to provide access to digitized primary source materials related to historic and modern trails in Nebraska.
Goals of the project include
- Increasing understanding amongst project participants of the benefits of cultural heritage institution collaboration. Values and practices of one type of cultural heritage institution can be shared by other types. Project participants will develop a common understanding of mutual vision, purpose, and users of the cultural heritage institutions and their resources across a multi-state region with a common heritage.
- Increasing participants' knowledge about digitization project management including market analysis, metadata, scanning, legal issues and sustainability. Grant participants will apply what they learn through training and use of the information on the websites by conducting successful Western Trails projects.
- Increasing the amount of digitized content about Nebraska's trails that is available to users.
The primary audience will be casual users, students/lifelong learners, and scholars with an interest in pioneer trails, railroads, highways and recreational trails in Nebraska and the other three participating states. Staff and volunteers of Nebraska libraries, museums, archives and historical societies.

Description:
The project will develop its collaborative model by working with a small group of libraries and museums in the southeast region of the state, providing the opportunity to learn how to manage collaborative projects. The expectation is that the model developed by this initiative will be replicated throughout the state in subsequent years. The state library will serve as the liaison between the CDP and the project participants. Metadata will be made available through the State’s WYLD system (http://gowyld.net), a statewide database. MARC records will be created for all objects. Digital objects will be hosted on the state’s web-site and the master images will be stored on a server hosted by the Wyoming Cultural Resources Division, following standards and quality control by the CDP.
The state library will fund scanning equipment needed by the project participants. Equipment decisions will be made based on the CDP scan standards.
