Choose one of the following projects for 100 points:
1. Create a spreadsheet and XY Scatter Chart with Data Points
Connected by Lines comparing the number of F0, F1, F2, F3, F4, F5 tornadoes
occurring in Colorado between the years of 1995 and 2001. List the tornado size
in Column A. Make up at least two questions the chart answers for you.
2. Using the earthquake database on the National Geophysical Data Center (www.ngdc.noaa.gov) >select Hazards from bottom of page>Earthquake Data>Earthquake Intensity Database>under City and State Parameters select Colorado>Search Database) to create a spreadsheet listing all the earthquakes in CO in 1978 1979. Make your categories: City, Month, Day, Hour (not minutes), and Intensity (MMI). Make up at least two questions referencing the data, and select information from the spreadsheet to create two charts (e.g. column chart comparing data such as city to intensity for a specific earthquake).
3. Create a spreadsheet of all forest fires that caused property damage in CO since 1996. Create a bar chart showing the areas and the amount of damage. Using the NCDC web site, write a brief narrative about why you think those areas were most susceptible to fire damage.
4. Create a spreadsheet of all lightening strikes that caused injuries, deaths, and property damage in CO during the years 2000. Create a column chart showing the number of injuries in the 10 cities where injuries occurred, and a pie chart of the four cities with property damage over $100,000.
5. Create a spreadsheet and chart that answers questions of your own choosing from either the National Climatic Data Center (http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/ncdc.html) or the National Geophysical Data Center (http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/)(an extra 50 points for this one!).
