Module 2: Ordeal by Cheque

In this module you will practice being a historian, by using check carbons to analyze events. (Check carbons are primary sources because they are documents created by an individual as a part of his/her daily life).

Instructions

  1. Read the entire selection Ordeal by Cheque by Wuther Crue.
  2. Determine the chronology of the events in the selection. * Create a timeline on a blank sheet of paper, as follows:
    • On the lower half of the timeline, record the major events in the selection - you may wish to use five-year increments to do this.
    • One the upper half of the timeline, record major historical events that correspond to the time period in the selection (1903-1931)
  3. Discuss the questions below and respond to them in writing.

Questions

  1. What do the documents presented tell you about:
    • The personalities and tendencies of the people involved?
    • The socioeconomic status of the people involved?
  2. What is the significance of including or excluding particular documents?
