Membership in the Colorado Library Association is climbing. The total of individual, institutional and corporate members is up 27 percent from last year.

Carol White, associate librarian at the University of Wyoming Libraries, has received the 1998 Agnes Milstead Distinguished Librarianship Award.

Kay Runge, Davenport Public Library director and former BCR Board of Trustee member, was named president of the Iowa Humanities Board.

The East Library and Information Center of the Pikes Peak Library District now has a Young Adult Advisory Board composed of youths ages 12-18 years from all over Colorado Springs. Its members help decide and execute such tasks as selecting new books and magazines for the library's Young Adult section.

Wyoming State Library has received an award from the Wyoming Public Health Association for creating a partnership in diabetes information accessibility and public awareness. The State Library endorsed the diabetes project to library directors, facilitated the ordering of books and videos, provided cataloging records and prepared news releases.

University of Iowa received an award of $73,348 from the Library of Congress/Ameritech National Digital Library Competition for its "Traveling Culture: Circuit Chautauqua in the 20th Century."

Lori Arp, head of central reference and media libraries at the University of Colorado at Boulder, was named the 1998 winner of the ACRL Instruction Sections' Miriam Dudley Instruction Librarian Award.

The Iowa Substance Abuse Information Center, a special service of the Cedar Rapids Public Library, launched its new web site: isaic.cedar-rapids.lib.ia.us. The site provides Internet access to the ISAIC journal database of more than 18,000 journal and newsletter articles on substance abuse and gambling.

Camila Alire, dean of libraries at Colorado State University, and Orlando Archibeque, social sciences bibliographer at the Auraria Library, have co-authored a guide on Latino library services: Serving Latino Communities: A How-To-Do-It Manual for Librarians.

New Libraries

Iowa -- The new Musser Public Library will be in a renovated and expanded U.S. Post Office building. Iowa Gov. Branstad honored the Oskaloosa Public Library Building Committee with the Best New Development/Construction award. The new Council Bluffs Public Library celebrated with an August 6 open house at which columnist Will Manley spoke. In May, Fort Dodge voters approved a $2.6 million bond issue to construct a new public library.
