OCLC ILL Updated

By Bonnie Robinson

This summer and fall will be a busy time for OCLC Interlibrary Loan users. Version 2.0 of the OCLC ILL Micro Enhancer for Windows is due out and an enhancement to the online ILL service will be installed. The release of New FirstSearch will affect both the FirstSearch-ILL Link and ILL Direct Request services, and a web-based version of the OCLC ILL system is being contemplated.

ILL Micro Enhancer Version 2 Coming

Version 2.0 of the OCLC ILL Micro Enhancer for Windows is soon to be released. It will include many enhancements suggested by users, including the ability to:
  • Schedule multiple download and update sessions each week.
  • Maintain up to 20 Conditional Lending Notes.
  • Print enhancements, including the ability to print two records per page.
  • Sort incoming requests, so specific borrowers' requests can be processed first.
  • Edit lending charges record by record.
The new version of the Micro Enhancer will require a 32-bit operating system such as Windows 95/98 or NT 4.0, as well as a Pentium processor with at least 133 MHz and 16MB of RAM. Version 2.0 will use Internet, Dial TCP/IP, Dedicated TCP/IP and Asynchronous Dial access methods. The new software will not support access via the synchronous multidrop (dedicated) lines or Communications Controllers.

When released, version 2.0 of the ILL Micro Enhancer can be downloaded from the OCLC Access Suite site at www.oclc.org/oclc/menu/suite/index.htm and at www.oclc.org/oclc/menu/me.htm. Version 3.0 of the Access Suite compact disc, which will include the new version of the ILL Micro Enhancer, will be available by the end of 1999.

"Reasons for No" Enhancement Installed

OCLC has installed an enhancement to its online system to allow lenders to enter their reasons for not supplying an item when they answer "No" to the query, "Can you supply?" The new optional feature uses the International Organization for Standardization's ILL standard 10161 Reason Unfilled codes. Some OCLC members have been requesting this feature for many years.

Lenders are now able to either respond "No" to requests or enter "Reasons for No," such as on loan, lost, noncirculating, etc. Borrowers are able to view lenders' responses in a Transaction History appended to the request. In addition, users can subscribe to a no-charge monthly "Reasons for No" report, consisting of two data files. Version 2.0 of the ILL Micro Enhancer will provide options for lenders to update "No" responses with "Reasons for No" and for borrowers to download Transaction History displays with their message files. See Technical Bulletin 233 for details.

New FirstSearch ILL Form to be Customized

New FirstSearch, due for release in August, will allow the FirstSearch ILL form to be customized. Libraries will decide what fields are required and whether notes for patrons should appear on the form. The way the patron name is entered will be standardized and validation will be tightened. A large part of the new administrative module will deal with ILL, so ILL staff may wish to attend New FirstSearch training and/or examine that part of the module when it is available.
