Disabling Netscape Navigator Preferences
As a librarian with public Internet stations, you may want to protect your Web browser's settings by
limiting public access
to the
Netscape Preferences found by selecting the Edit|Preferences... menu choices. The
following steps will disable this menu choice.
- Find the file prefui32.dll (usually in c:\Program
files\Netscape\Communicator\Program\).
- Rename the file (suggested): prefui32.dllx.
When the Edit/Preferences... menu choices are selected, Netscape looks for the file
prefui32.dll to execute the Preferences interface. By renaming the file, it no longer
exists; therefore, the Preferences interface will not appear.
If you want to be able to get into preferences yourself to make changes to your
workstation, rename the file prefui32.dll.
(Thanks to Steve Duffy, Dunn Library, Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa, for this
wonderful security tip.)
