(Immediately after the June issue of Action for Libraries went to press, OCLC delayed the release of the New FirstSearch beta version. You will be able to link to the beta version at the URL listed below when the beta version is released by OCLC.)

New FirstSearch Beta Released

By Michael Sauers

By the time you read this article OCLC should have released the beta version of New FirstSearch for library testing. The beta version can be found at URL: newfirstsearch.oclc.org.

By using the beta version, library staff members can start to familiarize themselves with many of the new features that will be available when the final upgrade occurs in August. These new features include result sorting options, cross-database searching and better full-text integration.

BCR suggests that you start familiarizing yourself with these new features so as to be able to better help your patrons when the final upgrade occurs. We do not recommend you allow patron access to the beta version since features are still subject to change and not all databases are available in the beta version. Costs for using FirstSearch beta are the same as for the current system.

We also recommend you subscribe to FIRSTSEARCH-L where all the beta FirstSearch information will be posted. Subscribe at www.oclc.org/oclc/forms/listserv.htm.
