Monteria Hightower begins work as the Nevada State Library and Archives administrator on May
3. She is a former Missouri State Librarian and regional administrator for the Las Vegas-Clark
County Library District.
Libraries throughout the BCR region were recognized in Hennen's American Public Library Rating
Index as among the top 20 libraries in their categories. Johnson County (Kansas) Library, Denver
Public Library and Boulder (Colorado) Public Library were in the top 20 in the over 100,000
population category. Population 10,000-99,999: Hays (Kansas) Public Library. Population 2,000-9,999: Conrad (Iowa) Public Library. Population under 2,000: Lynnville Public Library, Harpers
Ferry Public Library and Union Public Library, all in Iowa.
Colorado School of Mines was accepted to participate in OCLC's Enhance Program. Mines'
librarians will be working on enhancing records in the Maps format.
Topeka & Shawnee County (Kansas) Public Library has received a $225,000 challenge grant from
the National Endowment for the Humanities.
The Western History/Genealogy Department of Denver Public Library has launched the web
edition of its photography collection: gowest.coalliance.org. More than 50,000 historic photographs
are displayed online, with more to be added this year.
Davenport (Iowa) Public Library was written up in a recent newsletter published by Libraries for
the Future. The article told about the library's program, "A Blast from the Past."
U.S. West Foundation awarded Bemis (Colorado) Public Library a grant of $65,000 in training,
hardware and supplies to establish a technology training center.
Laramie County (Wyoming) Library System is one of 40 libraries in the nation selected to host the
National Connections reading and discussion series for new adult readers.
Kansas State Historical Society's World Wide Web site received the 1998 Marketing Award for
Electronic Media from the Travel Industry Association of Kansas.
ACLIN (Access Colorado Library & Information Network) was named by the Rocky Mountain News
as one of the 100 Great Colorado Web Sites.
