BCR Sponsors Teleconference
Free to BCR Member Libraries

BCR is pleased to offer to the library community a two-hour satellite teleconference, "What's A Librarian to Do? The Filtering Dilemma." The teleconference will be broadcast May 25 from 1-3 p.m. (Eastern Time).

BCR is providing the site license for this teleconference free to eligible BCR member libraries in appreciation for their support over this past year. (Eligible libraries include all types of libraries in the member states of Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming, plus libraries outside those states that are BCR/OCLC member libraries.)

By registering through BCR to downlink the teleconference, a library will receive the downlink coordinates, a master copy of the site coordinator's packet, a master copy of handouts, an evaluation form, other materials to augment the program and the right to make and retain a videotaped recording (one per downlink site) of the program.

"What's A Librarian to Do? The Filtering Dilemma" will look at one of the most heated and controversial topics confronting today's libraries. A group of distinguished professionals will discuss the filtering issue.

  • Clifford Lynch (Coalition for Networked Information) will provide an overview, including the history, technology and major issues librarians face when responding to the filtering dilemma.

  • Robert Huslhof (Southeastern Library Network) will demonstrate filtering software packages, including the technology requirements and options for running the software.

  • Tom Coggins (University of Richmond Law Library) will present the legal ramifications to libraries of filtering or not filtering. He will discuss how the courts, Congress and state legislatures are reacting to filtering.

  • Judith Krug (ALA Office of Intellectual Freedom) will present ALA's point of view and address key elements in ALA's Library Bill of Rights.

  • A panel of librarians will discuss the pros and cons of filtering, sharing experiences from their own filtered/unfiltered environments.

  • The role of acceptable use policies for Internet access and the key issues they should address will be discussed.

  • Finally, a panel will summarize the filtering dilemma facing librarians and outline the options available.
This is not a live teleconference. Viewers will not have an opportunity to ask questions of the presenters during the broadcast. Register by filling out the electronic form on BCR's web site: www.bcr.org/~shoffhin/ telintro.html.

(This teleconference is produced and broadcast jointly by the Southeastern Library Network -- SOLINET -- and the University of South Carolina School of Library and Information Science.)
