BLDSC Rush Service Available through OCLC

Libraries using the British Library Document Supply Centre (BLDSC) for document delivery now can use a new OCLC symbol, B#R, to order documents through BLDSC's Urgent Action (RUSH) Service. BLDSC has staff working 24 hours a day. No matter what U.S. time zone in which a library is located, the BLDSC Urgent Action Service will respond within three hours.

BLDSC customers can find full details by looking at OCLC's Name-Address Directory record for B#R (NACN: 105791). If you prefer, contact the British Library at its U.S. toll-free number (800) 932-3575. BCR members receive a 5 percent discount on documents delivered through BLDSC. Library staff with Internet access can see a complete list of all 260,000-plus journal titles available from BLDSC at the URL: opac97.bl.uk/. BLDSC is developing a new version of its OPAC, which will have improved ordering facilities. If you want to register for a BLDSC account through BCR, contact Bonnie Robinson at BCR.

Reminder: Workstation Sales, Maintenance Ending

OCLC will discontinue sales of OCLC workstations, modems, upgrades, add-ons and related hardware effective June 30. Orders for OCLC workstations will be accepted through May 7 to ensure installation no later than June 30.

"OCLC has always viewed the sale of workstations not as an end in itself, but as a means to providing cost-effective access to its services," said Rick Bean, manager, OCLC User Support. "Member libraries can now obtain workstations to access OCLC services from a variety of alternative sources at economical prices." Users are less dependent on OCLC for workstation setup, training and troubleshooting. Bean noted that the roles of telecommunications and workstations in OCLC's services have been changing progressively with advances in technology. OCLC is moving from its proprietary network to Internet and dedicated TCP/IP links that use ubiquitous, open-system protocols that are less complicated.

For optimum performance of OCLC applications, a Pentium-based workstation with Windows 95 or higher is recommended.

Also effective June 30, OCLC will discontinue monthly maintenance on the M386, M386SX, M386SX25, M466, M466DX, M466DX2, M486, M486DXI and M486SX25 workstations. OCLC will honor Extended Maintenance Options commitments through the end of the committed period per machine. All other OCLC workstation models not specifically mentioned will continue to be supported and maintained.

If you have questions about OCLC workstations, maintenance or OCLC software, contact Regan Harper at BCR.
