"So How Do I Catalog This?"
BCR Cataloging Workshops
(November 1999 Action for Libraries newsletter)

By Mike Wright

Does the prospect of cataloging a score or Internet resource make you break out in a cold sweat?

Do you feel woe and angst at the prospect of cataloging a CD recording?

Relax. BCR can help. We have a number of original cataloging workshops designed to allow cataloging staff to take the initiative and catalog a wide variety of materials without bringing on a case of hives.

The workshops, taught by BCR cataloging experts, are grounded in AACR2 and Library of Congress Rule Interpretations and take participants through the process of original cataloging step-by-step, with plenty of examples and time for questions. Workshops aren't geared just for OCLC users -- staff using any cataloging resource will find them very helpful.

Workshops are being offered throughout the BCR seven-state region, often in several locations. Those already scheduled include Cataloging: Audio-Visual Format, Cataloging: Computer Files Format and Cataloging: Sound Recordings Format. To be scheduled soon is a new offering, Cataloging: Scores Format. To find out more about each of these workshops, see the BCR Workshop Schedule booklet or go to the BCR Web page (www.bcr.org) and click on Workshops. For detailed information, contact the listed instructor. Information on the scores workshop will be mailed as soon as it's scheduled.

Is the workshop you want too far from your library or not on the schedule at all? BCR can do an on-site workshop for you in your library. If you have several people interested (they need not all be from the same institution) this can be a cost-effective and convenient way of getting the training you want. Contact Rosario Garza for more information about on-site workshops.
