OCLC New FirstSearch Now Up and Running

FirstSearch users can now log on to the OCLC New FirstSearch service. OCLC released the new reference service on August 18.

New FirstSearch integrates the current OCLC FirstSearch and OCLC FirstSearch Electronic Collections Online services and adds new features suggested by FirstSearch users.

Users have access to both the current and new versions of FirstSearch through December 12. Libraries may move to the new OCLC service any time up to that date. On December 12, the current version of FirstSearch, its text-only interface and the separate Electronic Collections Online interface will be discontinued. OCLC will continue to enhance New FirstSearch with additional features and databases. (See the schedule for implementing the changes at www.oclc.org/oclc/fs_new/features.htm.) By December 12, all the current FirstSearch databases will be available in the new version.

Settings from libraries' current FirstSearch accounts have been copied into the new service, so users may log on at the URL newfirstsearch.oclc.org using current authorization numbers and passwords. The new Web-based administrative module at newfirstsearch.oclc.org/admin will allow libraries to customize their New FirstSearch accounts.

Additional information, including details about Z39.50 access and the new guide, "Planning for the New OCLC FirstSearch Service," is available on the New FirstSearch Web site: www.oclc.org/oclc/menu/ fs_new.htm.
