Changes Come With New FirstSearch

The OCLC New FirstSearch interface is now up and running. Access to the new reference service is provided through the World Wide Web. Here are some important technological tidbits regarding New FirstSearch that you may have missed.

Libraries' method of accessing New FirstSearch should be a Web browser of version 4.x or higher. The current version of Netscape Communicator is 4.61 and the current version of Microsoft's Internet Explorer is 5.0. You should not use OCLC's Passport software or telnet to access New FirstSearch.

On Sunday, August 22, OCLC changed the IP address for FirstSearch. All old numeric addresses and old URLs stopped working. The FirstSearch URLs that are being dropped are bart, elwood, gilligan, homer, jake and medusa.prod.oclc.org. The preferred Internet OCLC domain name for New FirstSearch is firstsearch.oclc.org. You should check your bookmarks, favorites, shortcuts and links to read firstsearch.oclc.org, or you will not be able to access the New FirstSearch service. If you are in a situation that requires you to use a numeric IP address, the correct one is 132.174.11.3

The New FirstSearch Release Schedule, available at www.oclc.org/oclc/fs_new/features.htm, has been updated to reflect the status of features available in the just released New FirstSearch service. A significant addition to the planned functionality is the ability to e-mail records or full text up to 100 items at a time.

Full WebScript access to New FirstSearch also is available, with WebScript for Direct Journal Access to Electronic Collections Online journals to follow in a subsequent release.
