New MARC Record Option for BCR netLibrary Purchasers

By Regan W. Harper

Beginning early in December, OCLC will include the MARC records for the BCR netLibrary group purchase as a special OCLC WorldCat Collection Set. This set will contain all 3,323 records for the current BCR netLibrary shared collection and can be ordered directly from OCLC using the WorldCat Collection Sets online order form at www.stats.oclc.org/wcs_login.html.

Libraries wishing to purchase the set can do so for 28-cents per record. The fee includes setting institution holdings on the records in WorldCat. Although setting holdings is not required when ordering WorldCat collection sets, OCLC advises librarians to do so. Libraries that do not set their holdings cannot take advantage of OCLC's URL change notification system or the de-duping facility when additional records are added in the future. As additional titles are added to the BCR netLibrary shared collection, additional subsets of MARC records will be made available through OCLC's WorldCat Collection Set service.

All customization options noted on the WorldCat Collection Sets order form will be available for the BCR netLibrary set. Some of these options include:

  • Adding a public note ( z) to existing 856 fields with text of your choice.
  • Adding specific fields (global edits) to each record.
  • Adding a specific call number to each record.
    (e.g. 099 E-book)

For more details about the options available, see the WorldCat Collection Sets online order form.

Both OCLC and non-OCLC members can take advantage of this special WorldCat Collection Set. OCLC members can use the Web order form to place their orders electronically. Nonmembers will need to print out the .pdf version of the form for completion.

For libraries that do not wish to purchase MARC records for the full BCR netLibrary WorldCat Collection set, BCR is still offering to do the work for them for $1.12 per record plus the annual administration fee. The options available, including details and pricing, can be found on the BCR Web site at www.bcr.org/~randd/netlibmarc.html.

Option 1      Provide library with ISBN numbers only.
Option 2 Provide library with OCLC bibliographic records in a Cataloging Micro Enhancer file ready for editing.
Option 3 Set holdings for selected titles and provide the library with OCLC-MARC record export file, ready to load into its local system.
Option 4 Set holdings for all titles and provide the library with an OCLC-MARC record export file, ready to load into its local system.

Libraries currently enrolled in Fixed Fee Catalog pricing may want to get their records via BCR in one of the above options. Cataloging under these options falls into regular cataloging activity and is, therefore, covered by the Fixed Fee pricing. Libraries choosing this option can receive the records at no extra cost, except for the annual administration fee. Note, however, that these records would impact the fixed fee for the next year. WorldCat Collection sets are not covered under Fixed Fee Catalog pricing and so they would incur the 28 cent per record charge.
