(March 2000 Action for Libraries newsletter)

Patrons of 11 libraries in southeast Iowa have access to thousands of magazines and newspaper articles through IowaLink. The one-year pilot program enables patrons with Internet access to go libraries' Web sites and, by using their library card bar code number, access the articles online. The libraries are: Scott County Library System, Davenport Public Library, Bettendorf Public Library Information Center, Musser Public Library, American Institute of Commerce, Marycrest International University, St. Ambrose University, Palmer College of Chiropractic libraries and the three libraries of Eastern Iowa Community College.

Sandy Barstow, University of Wyoming Libraries Acquisitions, was presented the 1999 Agnes Milstead Award for Distinguished Librarianship.

William Crowe, Spencer Library, University of Kansas, a former member of the BCR Board of Trustees, was elected chair of the OCLC Board of Trustees.

Benjamin Ocon, branch manager of the Day-Riverside Branch of the Salt Lake City Public Library, received the 1999 REFORMA Librarian of the Year Award.

Irene Evers, retired forestry librarian at Mansfield Library, left the University of Montana an estate valued at $650,000. Half will support forest library collections.

George Machovec, associate director of Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries, was elected to the Library and Information Technology Association Board.

Kathleen McCloskey, medical librarian at the University of Utah, received the 1999 Michael E. DeBakey Library Services Outreach Award.

Kay Runge, director of the Davenport (Iowa) Public Library, was elected vice-president of PLA (Public Library Association).

Donna Levene, library media specialist at Overland High School (Colorado), is one of 50 selected to participate in the 1999 American Memory Fellows Program.

Southeast Junior High School Library in Iowa City (Iowa) is one of the top five winners of the ALA Young Adult Library Services Association's Excellence in Library Service to Young Adults Project. Among the remaining 30 that were recognized by the project are: Teton County (Wyoming) Library, Liberal (Kansas) Memorial Library, Davenport (Iowa) Public Library.

Washakie County (Kansas) Library is celebrating its 85th anniversary.

Olathe (Kansas) Public Library is celebrating its 90th anniversary.

The Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library received the 1999 H.W. Wilson Library Staff Development Grant presented by ALA.

Brigham Young University, University of Utah, Utah State University and Utah State Historical Society are winners of the Library of Congress/ Ameritech National Digital Library Competition.

The University of Iowa created an endowment fund in honor of Sheila Creth, head of the UI library system, to fund pilot projects to improve or expand UI Libraries services.

Wyoming librarian Agnes Milstead received the Presidential Award for the Republic of the Philippines for her work in establishing four libraries there.

Sharon Carlson, Donna Levene and Mary Jane Rowe of Overland High School library (Colorado) received the 1999 Progressive School Library Media Award from CEMA and Winnebago Software Company.

Denver Public Library is establishing an African- American Research Library to preserve the legacy of African-Americans in Colorado and the West.

Moundridge Public Library and Attica City Library have been named Outstanding Small Public Libraries for 1999 by the South Central Kansas Library System.

New Libraries

  • Nevada — University of Nevada, Las Vegas is building a new $53 million Lied Library. The 301,000 square-foot facility is expected to open the summer of 2000.

    Iowa — Davenport Public Library has dedicated a new history and genealogy center. The Richardson Sloane Special Collections Center contains more than 15,000 volumes.

    Utah — North Logan has a new 11,000 square-foot library, a large improvement over its former 700 square-foot home.
