OCLC Update

By Rosario Garza

ILLiad Agreement Signed
OCLC is now the sole vendor and distributor of ILLiad software through a joint partnership with Atlas Systems, Inc. and VTIP (Virginia Tech Intellectual Properties). Atlas Systems will provide ongoing technical support and development of the software.

ILLiad is a comprehensive interlibrary loan (ILL) management tool that helps reduce the time staff spends handling and processing ILL requests. It allows the end user to transmit electronic ILL requests.

ILLiad provides:

  • End-user ILL Request functions including a patron database that allows end users to track their own requests via a Web interface.
  • Quick transfer of a request to the ILL service of choice, including OCLC's ILL service, NLM's DOCLINE and RLG's Central RLIN ILL service.
  • Importing of OCLC, RLIN and DOCLINE requests to customized processing queues in lending.
  • Electronic link and search of the library's OPAC to verify and check out items.
  • A comprehensive ILL Statistical Management program that provides numerous ILL statistical reports including copyright tracking, most frequently requested title, collection analysis, borrowing and lending analysis.
  • Complete electronic management of both borrowing and lending functions, making paper-based files obsolete.

Server hardware requirements:

  • Intel Pentium III 600Mhz or greater processor
  • 256MB of RAM recommended; 128MB of RAM (minimum)
  • 18GB hard drive recommended; 9GB (minimum)
  • Ethernet connectivity to the Internet/intranet
  • Backup device recommended (DDS-3 tape or better)

Client hardware requirements:

  • Intel Pentium 200Mhz (minimum); 500Mhz (optimum)
  • 32MB of RAM (minimum); 256MB (optimum)
  • 2GB hard drive ( minimum); 18GB hard drive (optimum)
  • Ethernet connectivity to the Internet/intranet
  • Color ink jet printer highly recommended for printing labels; printer capable of handling removable labels (minimum)

The pricing is for an individual institution, based on physical site. Libraries can add satellite physical sites at an additional fee per satellite site. The annual license fee includes the software license fee, all updates to the software and support for the software. Pricing is based on the total number of interlibrary loan requests (borrows) per year at the institution. This total request number includes those placed on OCLC, other ILL service providers and ALA printed forms.

If satellite sites are included, all ILL activity at the main and satellite sites is totaled in the count of annual interlibrary loan activity.

A satellite site is a library affiliated with the same institution as the service site that intends to run a client from the main server. For example, University of XYZ has a main library, as well as law, medical and music libraries. ILLiad could operate on a single server at XYZ with the other three libraries configured on that server at the satellite site price.

The pricing for the ILLiad software is based on annual borrowing requests:

  Number of Requests: 0-1,500 1,501-10,000 10,001
and greater
Fee per
satellite site
  Member Price: $3,500 $4,000 $5,000 $1,000
  Nonmember Price: $4,500 $ 5,000 $6,000 $1,200

(*A nonmember library is any library that does not perform ILL or cataloging on OCLC or does not contribute to WorldCat via tapeloading or FTP. Nonmember libraries could be libraries that use DOCLINE or RLIN ILL services exclusively and have no affiliation with OCLC.)

Libraries may also have Atlas Systems staff install the software for a one-time installation fee of $1,200 per site. The charge covers installing the software on one site server and client. Installing the client software on additional sites at the institution is $100 per extra site. Libraries should note that client installation can be easily handled by library staff.

WebDewey Pricing Update
OCLC Forest Press is extending through December 31 the $450 introductory subscription price for WebDewey in CORC. The regular price for an annual subscription is $500. All subscriptions automatically renew after one year at the regular one-year subscription rate.

WebDewey in CORC, which provides Web-based access to an enhanced version of the full DDC database, is available to OCLC full cataloging members and partial users. Now anyone with an OCLC cataloging authorization can experience the power of Dewey on the Web. Although access to WebDewey is through the CORC Web site at corc.oclc.org, use of the CORC service is not a prerequisite for use of WebDewey.

If you would like to try out WebDewey in CORC before subscribing, contact BCR's Rosario Garza.

OCLC Expands System Hours
OCLC system hours have been expanded. New system hours are 24 hours a day except Sundays from 2 a.m.-6 a.m. Eastern Time. Services affected include OCLC Cataloging, OCLC Interlibrary Loan, OCLC Selection and OCLC Union List. The OCLC system will no longer have a midweek system shutdown on Thursday night and will be available beginning at 6 a.m. on Sunday, six hours earlier. CORC actions that require access to WorldCat will also benefit from these expanded hours.
