Janet Swan Hill, University of Colorado Libraries at Boulder, and Elayne S. Walstedter, Fort Lewis College (Durango), were appointed to the ALA Core Values Task Force.

Grants totaling $98,000 were provided to the Wichita Public Library by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The funds will provide 24 Pentium III computers and a computer training lab.

Urie (Wyoming) Elementary School Library is one of four winners of the Institute of Museum and Library Services annual National Award for Library Service. Librarians at the small rural library not only connected the school to the Internet, but also brought their county library online.

Camilla Alire, dean of libraries at Colorado State University, was elected to the ALA Executive Board.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation awarded $107,383 to ALA and the Kettering Foundation for programming in 12 libraries, including the Public Library of Des Moines, for the new PBS series, On Our Own Terms: Moyers on Dying in America.

Liz Bishoff, project director of the Colorado Digitization Project, a statewide collaborative involving Colorado's libraries, museums, archives and historical societies, was elected ALA treasurer.

Martha B. Gould was appointed chair of the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science. Gould is the retired director of the Washoe (Nevada) County Library and served at the Nevada State Library and as president of the Nevada Library Association.

The Casper Star-Tribune newspaper donated all of the photographs shot by its photographers from 1976 to mid-1995 to the Casper (Wyoming) College Library.
