BCR Now Offering Training
on New OCLC CORC Service

By Regan W. Harper

OCLC in July released to the library community its CORC service for cataloging electronic resources. Libraries are encouraged to make the leap from their old OCLC Cataloging service security blanket to the new OCLC CORC service. The new CORC service (Cooperative Online Resource Catalog) provides tools to help libraries identify, select and describe electronic resources. BCR is offering two new workshops to help make libraries' change to the new service smooth and painless.

OCLC CORC Service: Cataloging
This is a full-day, hands-on workshop that covers all the basics of using CORC to catalog electronic resources. Topics include:

  • Searching the CORC Resource Database.
  • Creating new resource records.
  • Editing existing records.
  • Exporting resource records.
  • Using the administrative services facility to monitor system use.

The instructor will provide hands-on, step-by-step exercises that illustrate practical examples of the CORC service in action. The workshop is a basic introduction to cataloging using CORC and assumes that trainees have little or no experience with the CORC system, but do have basic cataloging skills.

This class will not cover the rules governing cataloging Internet resources or computer files, but focuses instead on the use of the CORC system how to make CORC do what you need it to do. Staff interested in learning more about the rules involved with cataloging electronic resources should attend BCR's "Cataloging Internet Resources" and "Cataloging Computer Files" workshops.

OCLC CORC Service: Pathfinders
Pathfinders are a way for libraries to provide guided access to electronic resources for their patrons. In this half-day workshop, you will develop the practical skills needed to use the new OCLC CORC Pathfinder facility. Through hands-on exercises, you will learn to:

  • Search the CORC Pathfinder Resource for existing Pathfinders.
  • Create new Pathfinders from scratch or via cloning.
  • Harvest a Web site for quick Pathfinder creation.
  • Edit existing Pathfinder records to update the references cited.
  • Export Pathfinders or Pathfinder links for use on your own library's Web site.

This workshop is not restricted to catalogers, but is designed for anyone who wants to provide guidance and assisted access to the electronic resources in her library. Reference staff are particularly encouraged to come learn about the Pathfinder functionality of CORC.

BCR will begin offering these workshops in Colorado in mid-September.

  • OCLC CORC Service: Cataloging, September 19 or 20 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • OCLC CORC Service: Pathfinders, September 21 or 22 from 9 a.m. o 12 noon.

Workshops in BCR's other member states will follow. As both of these workshops are hands-on, computer labs are required for training. Libraries with available computer labs interested in hosting these workshops should contact Regan W. Harper in BCR's Aurora office.

Hosting sites not only get the privilege of being the first in their region to receive CORC training, but can send two staff members to the training at no charge. More information about hosting can be found on BCR's Web site at www.bcr.org/workshop/hosting.html.
