BCR Offers Latest Version of RLG's Ariel Software

By Laura Chittivej

Ariel V3.0 software, just released by Research Libraries Group (RLG), offers librarians a sophisticated set of document transmission features. Ariel allows you to turn your PC, printer and scanner into a state-of-the-art document transmission station on the Internet.

The new Ariel 3.0 allows:

  • Sending and receiving documents using MIME e-mail standards and FTP. You can transmit complex documents including very long text, information containing non-ASCII character sets (such as non-Latin scripts), as well as materials containing images and multiple fonts.

  • Scanning and sending gray-scale and color images. (Adding grayscale can significantly improve black-and-white images.)

  • Scanning at variable resolutions of up to 600 dots per inch.

  • Scanning originals as large as 11x17 inches (279x432 mm) or A3 (297x420 mm) and printing at these same sizes.

  • Accommodating firewalls.

Recipients of transmissions have the ability to evaluate and select pertinent pages for use without having to print or forward an entire document.

Scanners that require TWAIN drivers and scanners that use either the USB or SCSI interface are supported. As always, RLG acquires, tests and lists a subset of all the TWAIN- and ISIS-driven scanners available. Full e-mail and phone technical support is available for Ariel installations using an RLG-listed scanner.

BCR offers Ariel V3.0 with a 30 percent discount off the published retail price. Ariel V3.0 Full (allows users to send and receive transmissions) is $664.50 instead of the regular price of $949. You can upgrade from Ariel 2.x for only $346.50 instead of the regular $495 price. To order Ariel V3.0 contact BCR's Laura Chittivej (lchittiv@bcr.org).
