OCLC Update

By Rosario Garza

CatExpress Now in CORC Environment
In late July, the OCLC Cataloging Express service (CatExpress) was moved into the CORC environment. Although designed to meet the needs of smaller libraries, CatExpress may also be used by larger libraries for copy cataloging and deleting holdings. This installation is an initial step in moving to the OCLC integrated desktop.

Current CatExpress users will be redirected automatically from the URL catexpress.oclc.org to the new CatExpress page. OCLC has mounted an updated News feature. CatExpress users will still be able to do everything they used to be able to do. They also will see a new color scheme for the service.

CORC users will notice a new CatExpress option on the CORC navigation bar. This functionality is completely optional. None of the existing options on the CORC navigation bar have been removed or altered, and no changes to a library's existing workflows are necessary. While some wording changes have been made on the initial log-on and home screens, etc., this was reportedly done only to reassure CatExpress users that they are in the proper place.

If full cataloging users opt to employ CatExpress for a portion of their workflow, the work will be billed on a per-transaction basis, at the same rate as CORC activity.

One note of caution: CatExpress does not support the export functionality. CatExpress subscribers are automatically profiled for the Electronic MARC Subscription. Member libraries using CatExpress for updating holdings in WorldCat must have an Electronic MARC Subscription if they wish to receive records for loading into their local systems. The Electronic MARC Subscription is optional for libraries using CatExpress only for deleting holdings.

Also included with this installation is an additional Pathfinder-RC record creation option. In addition to being able to embed existing CORC Resource Catalog records into a Pathfinder, the user may now request that CORC create and place RC records in the institution's Save File for those URLs in the Pathfinder for which RC records do not yet exist. The user indicates an e-mail address to receive notice of records that have been created in the Save File.

Dewey for Windows CD-ROM to End
OCLC Forest Press has announced that it will discontinue the Dewey for Windows CD- ROM effective December 31. Users of the CD-ROM product should plan to migrate to WebDewey in CORC or WebDewey.

WebDewey in CORC is currently available to full cataloging members and partial users; it will become available to CatExpress users in August. An annual subscription to WebDewey in CORC is $500 for an unlimited number of users at the same physical location. A single-user subscription option, priced at $225 per year, will become available in January 2002. The WebDewey in CORC order form is available at www3.oclc.org/app/webdewey/.

WebDewey will be released in January 2002. Based on the same database as WebDewey in CORC, WebDewey will be available to libraries that do not have OCLC Cataloging service authorization.

Licenses to WebDewey will be available by subscription at a special introductory price of $225 per year for a single user and $500 per year for an unlimited number of users at a single location. The introductory prices will be in effect through March 31, 2002, after which the regular subscription prices will apply $275 per year for a single user and $575 per year for an unlimited number of users at the same site. After the first year, all subscriptions will renew at the regular subscription prices.
