OCLC Update

By Rosario Garza
Spelling Checker for Cataloging ME Available
OCLC has purchased Spelling Checker for the Cataloging Micro Enhancer (CatME) from InfoWorks Technology Company and made it available at no charge to Cataloging Micro Enhancer users. You can customize the software to check selected fields, and with many fields you can specify to skip subfields that include names. Users wanting to try the spell checker can download it from the OCLC Web site at www.oclc.org/oclc/menu/catme.htm.

Pinyin-converted LC Bibliographic Records Loaded in WorldCat The first Library of Congress (LC) bibliographic records converted from Wade-Giles to pin- yin by the Research Libraries Group as part of the LC/RLG/OCLC Cooperative Pinyin Conversion Project were loaded into WorldCat, the OCLC Online Union Catalog, in early December 2000. Converted LC records will be loaded into WorldCat during the next few months, as they are received. All converted bibliographic records contain a 987 field indicating the conversion status of each record. See OCLC records #41661312, #43167996 and #43381567 as examples.

For details about the Pinyin Conversion Project, please see the LC Web site at lcweb.loc.gov/catdir/pinyin/ pinyin.html, the OCLC Pinyin Conversion Web site at www.oclc.org/oclc/pinyin/index.htm and OCLC Technical Bulletin 240 at www2.oclc.org/oclc/pdf/tb/240.pdf.

Questions regarding specific data in the converted pinyin bibliographic records should be directed to Phil Melzer, Regional and Cooperative Cataloging Division/LC (pmel@loc.gov) or call (202) 707-7961.

NLM Field 069 Control Numbers Moved to Field 016
In April, OCLC moved National Library of Medicine (NLM) control numbers from field 069 to field 016. A total of 754,769 records were modified. This conversion relates to Technical Bulletin 241: National Library Control Number Changes www.oclc.org/oclc/tb/tb241.

Field 016 was formerly used for the National Library of Canada control number only. As part of OCLC- MARC Bibliographic Update 2000, field 016 was renamed and redefined to be used for unique numbers assigned to a record by a national bibliographic agency other than the Library of Congress. For more information see Technical Bulletin 236 www.oclc.org/oclc/tb/tb236/.

OCLC made field 069 invalid in May. Do not input field 069; instead use field 016. If you have questions, contact Linda Gonzalez (lgonzale@bcr.org) or Mike Wright (mwright@bcr.org) at BCR.

OCLC Union List Holdings Display Changes
Due to the upcoming installation of expanded institution symbols later this year (see Action for Libraries, June 2001, "OCLC Update" column), OCLC had to install some changes to Union List commands and displays.

The OCLC system will now accept the ULxxx and ULxxxx commands with or without the space. Previously, no space was allowed. ULxxx can be entered as ULxxx or ULxxx (with "xxx" being an institution symbol of three or five-to-eight characters). UL xxxx will be entered as ULxxxx or UL xxxx (with "xxxx" being a four-character group symbol). There are now two new commands available:

  • UI xxx (with "xxx" being an institution symbol of three or five-to-eight characters)
  • UG xxxx (with "xxxx" being a group symbol)

The Union List Group displays have also changed. The Union List Group displays will have space for up to eight-character symbols.

Old display example:

  • CGP (19821000,0,4,8) 1- 1845-
  • IAI (19891000,0,4,8) 1-14;1- 1845-1859;1859-

New display example:
  • CGP (19821000,0,4,8) 1- 1845-
  • IAI (19891000,0,4,8) 1-14;1- 1845-1859;1859-
