BCR Board Reduces Prices
for Lexis-Nexis and OCLC Products
The BCR Board of Trustees voted to reduce the network surcharge on OCLC and Lexis-
Nexis products at its recent spring meeting. The action provides relief to member
libraries' budgets at a time when many other library costs are rising.
BCR member libraries will see a reduction in prices for BCR Lexis-Nexis group
subscriptions. BCR is using Web technology to administer the subscriptions more
efficiently and has decreased its service fees to the lowest point since BCR began selling
these popular databases.
Final Lexis-Nexis prices won't be available until June because they are based on the total
number of libraries that subscribe to the databases by May 31. Final prices will be listed
on BCR's Web site (www.bcr.org) as soon as they are available and communicated by e-
mail to all members.
BCR's prices for some OCLC products also decreased. This fiscal year OCLC took a
second step towards eliminating its online cataloging First-time Use (FTU) charge, a
move to remove a barrier to setting library holdings online in WorldCat. But OCLC
increased a number of other fees to recover the income lost in the FTU changes. The
BCR Board of Trustees voted an additional reduction of the set holdings charge for BCR
member libraries, beyond that set by OCLC, and also decided to pass along only half of
the increase in OCLC search charges.
The surcharge reductions on Lexis-Nexis and OCLC products should save BCR member
libraries more than $10,000 in the coming year.
