OCLC FirstSearch ECO New Purchase Option
Per-article purchase of OCLC FirstSearch Electronic Collections Online (ECO) journal content is now available. This new feature allows libraries to enable the purchase of individual articles in electronic journals to which they do not subscribe, complementing their existing journal subscriptions and allowing them to plan future subscriptions.

FirstSearch administrators can opt to enable per-article purchase of issues not included in a library's subscription content, enabling them to fill in gaps that may exist in their current electronic journal subscriptions. The per-article price and associated "Enable" button will only appear in the administrative module for a journal purchased by a library via subscription when access is available through per-article purchase.

In addition, the ECO per-article purchase functionality has been built so that a library cannot enable per-article purchase for content of journal issues that already are part of the library's subscription. When delivering access to online full text, FirstSearch will always default to delivery of subscription content over delivery of content that must be purchased for an additional fee.

All purchases made through this option will be billed to FirstSearch libraries on a monthly basis. The fee will be included in libraries' regular monthly bills for OCLC services.

Contact Karen Graham (kgraham@bcr.org) for additional information.

OCLC Enhances WorldCat on FirstSearch
OCLC has released the first of a series of enhancements to the WorldCat database on the OCLC FirstSearch service. All enhancements display automatically to users of WorldCat on the FirstSearch Web interface and are available at no additional charge.

This initial enhancement to WorldCat includes:

  • Format-specific icons that represent document types in WorldCat and include information about document subtypes in brief records displays. The new format- specific icons display on WorldCat search screens with check boxes for limiting searches by document type, in the brief records in WorldCat results lists to indicate the document types of the retrieved material and in the full record displays.

  • Links to WorldCat search screens to enable users to identify OCLC codes of libraries to which they wish to limit searches. A "Find codes" link next to the Limit by Library Code search box on the Advanced and Expert search screens opens a window that displays the OCLC Participating Institutions Search screen from which individual library information can be located.

  • The addition of evaluative content to WorldCat records for current popular material, tables of contents, cover art, book summaries and notes about authors, all provided by Ingram Library Services.

OCLC Expands ArticleFirst Database
With the implementation of OCLC's newly expanded Article-First database, users now have access to tables of contents from the OCLC ContentsFirst database and citations from the OCLC FirstSearch Electronic Collections Online.

Note that separate access to the ContentsFirst database has been discontinued in both the OCLC FirstSearch Web and text-only interfaces. ContentsFirst users will not be automatically redirected to ArticleFirst if they have IP address recognition URLs set up or if they access ContentsFirst via a Web script. Libraries should remove all existing links and scripts to the ContentsFirst database.

For questions or to subscribe to any reference database, contact BCR's Jim Hensinger (jhensing@bcr.org) or Karen Graham (kgraham@bcr.org).
