OCLC Update

By Rosario Garza

Using BibNote with CORC
Librarians who are including bibliographic records for electronic materials in their online catalogs are always concerned about the maintenance of URLs. Both OCLC's Bibliographic Record Notification service (BibNote) and CORC offer a form of URL checking. BibNote delivers an upgraded OCLC MARC record when an 856 field (URL) has been added, changed or deleted from a record, and CORC offers URL checking and notification for broken or redirected URLs. CORC's URL checking and notification is included as part of the service.

The BibNote service automatically delivers upgraded OCLC MARC records to your library if an 856 field has been added, changed or deleted. For this to occur, your library's holding symbol must be attached to the appropriate record, and you must have a BibNote profile established with this option. Upgraded records can be delivered via the Product Services Web (PSW), Electronic Data Exchange (EDX) or tape. The cost for FY 2001-2002 is $.13 per record delivered.

The CORC URL checking and notification service scans URLs in resource records to detect links that are not found or have been relocated. When a broken link is discovered, the system assigns the appropriate URL problem status to the record and displays it in a list of broken URLs compiled for an institution. By setting the URL notification option to Yes within a record, a user will be notified when the URL has problems. To access the status links, log in to the CORC service and go to the Resource Catalog. Under Show, click on By Status to display the list for your institution.

Further BibNote documentation is available at: www.oclc.org/oclc/menu/bibnote.htm. CORC general information is available at: www.oclc.org/corc/. If you have further questions about BibNote or the CORC services, just call BCR.

Netscape 6 and 6.1 with CatExpress
OCLC is receiving questions about the compatibility of CatExpress and Netscape 6.0 and higher now that CatExpress has moved to the CORC platform. OCLC still recommends that libraries not use Netscape 6.0 to do work in CatExpress. However, Netscape 6.1 has no known problems working with CatExpress and CORC. OCLC recommends that CatExpress users utilize Internet Explorer 4.x or higher or Netscape 4.x or 6.1 to do their CatExpress work.

If you have questions about CatExpress, contact Linda Gonzalez (lgonzale@bcr.org) or Mike Wright (mwright@bcr.org) at BCR.

New Quality Control Symbol
As of September 1, OCLC began using a new symbol on records corrected and replaced in the WorldCat database by its Quality Control staff in the Metadata Standards & Quality Division. The new symbol is OCLCQ and is represented in the Name-Address Directory by NACN 109951. The symbol is also an example of the new, expanded symbols OCLC began assigning as of August 12. If you have questions about this symbol or the symbol-expansion project (see the June 2001 issue of Action for Libraries), contact BCR.

New Union List Electronic List Available
Over the past couple of years, OCLC has seen a growing interest in union listing, and staff from a number of libraries have expressed interest in an electronic list dedicated to discussing union list topics. In response, OCLC has established an electronic list specifically for union list issues and concerns. The list is now active and is open to anyone interested in union listing, and specifically, in union listing on OCLC.

To subscribe send the command subscribe ul-l [first name] [last name] to listserv@oclc.org.

If you have questions about the OCLC Union List service, contact Ann Schwab (aschwab@bcr.org)
at BCR.
