OCLC/BCR Support Ending
for Windows 3.X/95-based Products
By Regan W. Harper
Microsoft plans to end support for Windows 3.X and Windows 95 on December 31,
2001. At that time, OCLC and BCR will discontinue supporting OCLC Windows-based
products under these versions of Windows. OCLC expects that the products will
continue to work. However, no OCLC testing will be completed under these versions of
Windows, and users contacting OCLC with problems will be asked to upgrade to a newer
version of Windows.
In the future, OCLC expects to discontinue support for various versions of Windows at
the same time as Microsoft. Focusing on testing only the Microsoft- supported versions
of Windows will allow OCLC to better allocate resources.
Based on information currently available, OCLC expects to end support for Windows 98
and Windows NT 4.0 on June 30, 2003. Microsoft has outlined lifecycle plans for its
software at
www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle.asp.
The OCLC Access Suite Applications System Requirements document at
www.oclc.org/oclc/menu/suite/systemrequirements.htm
provides information about
these changes. In addition, a note will be added to the product home page for the OCLC
Access Suite applications that are currently supported by Windows 95:
OCLC Cataloging Label Program
OCLC Cataloging Micro Enhancer for
Windows software
OCLC ILL Micro Enhancer for Windows
software
OCLC Passport for Windows software
