Newspaper Resources Available From BCR

By Ellen Fox

Library staff occasionally call BCR and ask what newspaper resources are available through our group discount programs. The answer often depends on the type of library buying the subscription.

All types of libraries are eligible to participate in the discount program for SIRS Researcher, Government Reporter, Renaissance and Discoverer. SIRS databases cover selected full-text articles from many national and international newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times, Christian Science Monitor, USA Today and many others. SIRS also covers U.S. and international periodicals other than newspapers, government publications, maps and proprietary study guides and pathfinders.

LexisNexis products also contain full-text newspaper articles. The flagship database, Academic Universe, has the greatest number of full-text articles from national, regional and international newspapers, but is available only to libraries at two- and four-year colleges and universities. A different LexisNexis product, Scholastic Universe, is available to K-12 libraries and contains selected full-text from more than 65 newspapers, as well as articles from magazines and wire services and transcripts.

Free sources of online newspapers include www.ipl.org/div/news/. News stories from the wire services are available from news.google.com and news.excite.com.
