BCR-sponsored Teleconference
BCR member libraries can downlink the new College of DuPage teleconference series
"Virtual Reference Services... What, Why and How?" for free. The two- program series
will be broadcast February 8, 2002, and April 19, 2002, 12 noon to 2 p.m. Eastern Time.
The BCR Board of Trustees authorized the purchase of this unlimited-site license to
allow member libraries in nine of BCR's 12 member states to downlink the series at no
charge. (The state libraries in Idaho, Utah and Washington have already purchased their
own statewide downlink licenses. Libraries in those states should contact their state
libraries for information about participating in the programs.)
All Hawaii libraries are in the satellite reception area. Libraries in Southern Alaska are
also in range to receive the satellite transmission. However, libraries in Western Alaska,
are outside the satellite's range and will be unable to receive these programs. Interested
libraries in those areas can receive videotapes of the programs by registering via BCR's
Downlink Site Registration Form. Libraries in Oregon, BCR's other new member state,
also are eligible to participate, as are individual member libraries outside BCR's member
states.
To downlink the teleconference, please complete BCR's Downlink Site Registration
Form at www.bcr.org/~shoffhin/telecon/register.html. The deadline to register is January
22. Already 35 sites have signed up, including the State Library of Iowa, which is
rebroadcasting the programs throughout the state via its ICN network. The Shawnee
Mission School District (Kansas) also is rebroadcasting to its 60 libraries through its
network.
Under the terms of BCR's agreement with the College of DuPage, participating libraries
will be provided with Web-delivered collateral materials, the right to record each
program on videotape and the ability to call in or fax questions during the broadcasts.
BCR's license agreement also allows downlink sites to use the tapes for ILL purposes.
Since BCR is providing the downlink licenses at no charge, BCR is requiring
participating libraries to open their sites — at no charge — to others who wish to attend
the programs.
These programs are designed to clarify the differences between traditional and virtual
reference services and analyze the organizational impact this new service can have. For
more information about the programs, visit the College of DuPage Web site:
www.cod.edu/teleconf/VIRTUAL/index.htm.
If you have questions about BCR's
sponsorship, or would like more information, please contact BCR's Sharon Hoffhines at
