Abridged Dewey Now
Available Over the Web
By Rosario Garza
If you use the abridged edition of Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC), you can now
access the latest changes to the abridged edition by subscribing to OCLC's Abridged
WebDewey.
Key features of Abridged WebDewey include:
- An easy-to-use, browser-based interface that allows you to search the DDC (and
related terminology) efficiently and navigate intuitively.
- Thousands of relative index terms and built numbers not available in the print
version of the DDC.
- Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) that have been intellectually
mapped to Dewey headings by DDC editors, including many from the Forest
Press publication Subject Headings for Children.
- Mappings between abridged Dewey numbers and subject headings from the latest
edition of H.W. Wilson's Sears List of Subject Headings.
- Links from mapped LCSH to the LCSH authority records.
- Quarterly updates, incorporating the latest changes to the classification and new
LCSH mappings, index terms and built numbers.
- An annotation capability, which allows you to add your own notes into Abridged
WebDewey to reflect local classification practices.
Abridged WebDewey is available on an annual subscription basis. Pricing is based on
two factors: does your library use OCLC cataloging services, and do you want a single-
user license or a site license?
