BCR and MINITEX Offer ACM Digital Library
BCR has joined with MINITEX to offer BCR member libraries consortial pricing for the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Digital Library Package. The package includes:

The annual subscription runs September 1, 2002 through August 31, 2003. The sign-up period ends July 31. Pricing per institution is normally $9,045 for a one-year subscription. For this year, however, pricing has been set at $5,125 per library. If six or more BCR libraries join in the purchase, prices will be reduced even further. A free trial is available at www.acm.org/dl/ and allows anyone interested to log on and perform searches. Full text of all ACM articles is available through subscription only.

For more information, please contact Karen Docherty at MINITEX, (612) 624-2924 or by e-mail at kdochert@umn.edu.

Ovid/SilverPlatter Product Changes and Enhancements
Books In Print with Book Reviews has been updated to include an additional 253,870 records. New features and enhancements are:

  • The addition of bibliographic records for audio cassettes from Bowker's Words on Cassette.
  • The addition of bibliographic records for videos from Bowker's Complete Video Directory.
  • Expanded publisher and distributor information from Bowker's Publisher Authority Database.
  • Additional book review sources such as Doody's Reviews, ForeWord Magazine and VOYA.
  • Three new fields: CN (Corporate Name; DD (Dewey Decimal Classification); and DS (Distributor).
  • The AU (Author) index has been renamed to AUI (Browsable Author Index).

The ATLA Religion Database — 10 Year Rolling File (ATLA-SU-10) has been discontinued. All new customers should order the full file, ATLA-SU-49 or ATLA-DB-149/L49 (Ovid), or the full-text version, ATLA-SU-FT (SP). All existing 10 Year File customers will be automatically migrated to the ATLA-SU-49 database. Transitional pricing is available for the next two years, and letters will be sent to all ATLA-SU-10 customers informing them of the upgrade.

Users of the Ovid or SilverPlatter versions of Sociological Abstracts and Ovid's sociofile are missing the 1999 issues of the Sociological Perspectives journal, and the publisher is currently unable to supply them. Subscribers will be notified when the publisher is able to find a source for these issues.

OCLC FirstSearch Service News
OCLC has changed the way library holdings information for serials is linked to records in search results for all First- Search databases that provide access to library holdings information. It is hoped that this change, which became visible to users on May 24, will increase the accuracy of library holdings information that is presented to users of FirstSearch. Holdings for a serial are now presented based on links to the CURRENT ISSN. Previous to this change, holdings in FirstSearch databases other than WorldCat were based on the WorldCat ISSN fields 022/az, 789/x, 785/x, covering current, previous and subsequent ISSNs for serials.

OCLC has also added two new WorldCat indexes:

  • The Material Type Index — search for subtypes of more broad material formats such as DVD, VHS, CD, newspapers, music, cassette, LP and nonmusic. Users may also limit searches by other material characteristics or format subtypes.
  • Musical Composition Index — WorldCat users can now define the exact type of musical composition they need within search statements. The index supports searching by categories of musical compositions such as ballads, blues, carols, country music or operas.

OCLC has added 74 new journals to its FirstSearch Electronic Collections Online bringing the total number of journals online to 4,013.

The OCLC PsychINFO database now allows researchers to find records in the PsychINFO_1887 database on FirstSearch that cite a known author or title in addition to locating additional author and journal information. Hot links within the database connect users to the cited items that are available within PsychINFO_1887. In addition, PsychINFO_1887 now includes several new fields and subfields including additional subsequent author affiliations, serial title (journal home page) URL, number of references, correspondence information and cited references.

OCLC FirstSearch functionality has been enhanced by the addition of an option through which FirstSearch will search Z39.50 library catalogs from records in the OCLC FirstSearch service and display this local holdings information within a FirstSearch record. Up to 10 Z39.50 library catalogs can be displayed within a FirstSearch record display, thus expanding the existing option for libraries to establish links from FirstSearch to Web-based library catalogs for access to local holdings information. Library staff can enable and manage the FirstSearch Z39.50 library catalogs display through a new "Z39.50 Library Catalogs" area of the System Settings section of the FirstSearch administrative module.

Finally, FirstSearch administrators may now use the FirstSearch administrative module to activate a link that lets users order documents during a FirstSearch search session from Infotrieve, a full-text document supplier. When this purchase option is enabled, links appear in detailed records for citations for which the institution does not make full text available through the FirstSearch service. The default for linking to Infotrieve is OFF. If a library wants to provide Infotrieve access to its users, this option must be enabled in the Outbound linking area of the database settings section of the administrative module.

Groveart.com Adds Content Updates
