Free netLibrary MARC Records Available
Through OCLC WorldCat Collection Sets
By Regan W. Harper
Libraries that participated in the BCR netLibrary shared collection now have access to
6,616 e-books. But did you know that you can get free OCLC MARC records for these
titles as well?
OCLC is now offering libraries free netLibrary MARC records through its WorldCat
Collection Set (WCS) service, provided library staff do not request any customization to
the record apart from additions to the 856 $z subfield. Detailed instructions about how to
order the WCS netLibrary records can be found at:
www.bcr.org/~bss/wcs-netlib.html.
Libraries that have already purchased some of the set can still acquire the remainder of
the collection at no charge. Simply request only the subsets you did not previously order.
If you are unsure which subsets you already ordered, contact BCR.
As well as the MARC records for the BCR shared collection, libraries may also wish to
order records for the netLibrary titles that are in the public domain. Currently the set has
3,405 records, divided into subsets by category. The categories include:
American History
Drama
Fiction
Juvenile
Math, Science and Technology
Nonfiction
Poetry
Religion and Philosophy
These records are also available at no charge via the OCLC WorldCat Collections Set
service.
Other netLibrary WCS that may be of interest to
libraries in the BCR region include: netLibrary - IPAL; netLibrary - Kansas Virtual; and
netLibrary- BCR Ready Reference (coming soon). For further information about any of
these sets, contact Regan W. Harper (rharper@bcr.org) at the BCR offices.
