OCLC Update

By Rosario Garza

ILL Web Access Billing
OCLC has installed changes to its telecommunications software that now capture ILL Web access information. As a result of this upgrade, OCLC ILL service users who utilize the ILL Web interface are now being billed for their connect time. The charges are the same as they would be if a user connects to the OCLC ILL service using either Passport or the ILL Micro Enhancer. If you have any questions, contact Regan Harper (rharper@bcr.org) or Ann Schwab (aschwab@bcr.org) at BCR.

Coding for Internet Audio Files
In response to a question posted to an electronic list about how to code audio files available via the Internet, OCLC issued this statement: "MARC 21 (i.e., MARC 21 Bibliographic Format) has not yet fully caught up with electronic resources, although it is attempting to do so. In the meantime, treat audio files as sound recordings, which means that many of the REC 007 values will be other. Also include a COM 007 and a COM 006 for the remote computer file aspects of the audio files."

Keyword Search Enhancements Installed
OCLC has installed enhancements to Keyword Searching of WorldCat from the OCLC Cataloging, CORC, ILL, Selection and Union List services.

Technical Bulletin 235 has been revised to reflect the changes and is available at www.oclc.org/oclc/tb/tb235/tb235.htm. OCLC System Help has been updated, as has CORC Help.
The electronic version of the Searching WorldCat User Guide also was updated.

OCLC Z39.50 Cataloging and Keyword Searching Enhancements
If you use the Z39.50 Cataloging (ZCAT) interface to OCLC, please be aware that the keyword searching enhancements have an impact on your connectivity.

The largest impact on ZCAT users will be the substitution of the Keyword All (KA) index for the Keyword/ Basic (KW) index. Previously, use attribute 1016 was pointing to the KW index. After the enhancement, use attribute 1016 should point to the KA index, while the old KW index will be accessible by use attribute 5110. For the majority of users, no configuration changes to local Z39.50 clients will be necessary, because the enhanced KA index will provide improved retrieval. ZCAT users who wish to continue using the old KW index should change use attribute 1016 to 5110.

Another feature that ZCAT users will find useful is the ability to limit subject searching by type. The use attributes are listed below:

     27Library of Congress
     1008LC Children's Literature
     25MESH
     1088National Agricultural Library
     5300National Library of Canada
     28Repertoire des vedettes-matiere
     1210Sears

These changes have been updated on the OCLC Z39.50 Cataloging documentation page
( www.oclc.org/oclc/cataloging/z3950/zcat_searchtips.htm).
