Renewal Period Beginning
for BCR Database Subscriptions
By Karen Graham
With the arrival of May and June, BCR member libraries are reminded that it's time to
renew a number of BCR reference database subscriptions. Libraries that want to
continue their subscriptions to these products must complete the renewal forms to ensure
their access is not interrupted.
Libraries wishing to subscribe for the first time, always welcome additions, should
follow the same instructions for renewals outlined below.
Grove, McGraw-Hill, Oxford University Press, LexisNexis, Dialog Online, OVID
Online, Britannica and Grolier databases are all approaching their renewal dates.
To
renew any of these subscriptions, please go to
www.bcr.org/~ids/Reference/, then click on the name of the vendor or product you wish to renew or
subscribe, then on Order Form. Prices for the new year are also available at the same
location on BCR's Web site.
Grove Online
This is the start of the annual BCR Grove Online renewal/sign-up period. All BCR
Grove subscriptions expire concurrently on June 30, 2002. The Grove Dictionary of
Music Online, The Grove Dictionary of Art Online, Encyclopedia of Life Sciences,
Encyclopedia of Astronomy & Astrophysics and Scientific American Archive Online
continue to be available. Grove also has announced two new products — the Cancer
Handbook and the Kodansha Encyclopedia of Japan.
- An authoritative reference source on Japan, Kodansha's Encyclopedia of Japan is
a fully searchable online resource that offers comprehensive scholarship on all
aspects of Japanese society from its origins to its present position as a world
power.
- The Cancer Handbook is a major new reference work that provides a
comprehensive overview of cancer, biology and medicine. All aspects of
scientific and clinical information on cancer research and medicine are explored.
McGraw-Hill
BCR's annual McGraw-Hill Access-Science group subscription renewal/sign-up period
is just beginning. All BCR McGraw-Hill subscriptions expire concurrently on June 30,
2002. To avoid interrupting access, all renewals must be received by May 10.
AccessScience provides full access to 7,100-plus articles, 115,000 dictionary terms and
hundreds of Research Updates in all areas of science and technology, updated daily.
Navigate using 20 main subject areas, each with its own home page.
Oxford University Press
Now begins the annual BCR Oxford University Press (OUP) renewal/sign-up period. All
BCR OUP subscriptions expire concurrently on June 30, 2002.
The Oxford English Dictionary Online (OED) and the American National Biography
(ANB) continue to be available, and OUP has announced a new product — Oxford
Reference Online: The Core Collection (ORO). This new reference service brings
together 100 well-known and trusted dictionaries and reference books into a single cross-
searchable Web database. It offers integrated, consistent coverage of a broad range of
subjects: from general reference, language and quotations to science and medicine, and
from humanities and social sciences to business and professional.
LexisNexis
The annual BCR LexisNexis renewal/sign-up period also is in progress. All BCR
LexisNexis subscriptions expire concurrently on June 30, 2002.
To avoid a hiatus in access, all renewals must be received by May 10.
Academic Universe; Congressional Universe including Statutes-at-Large and Congressional
Indexes; State Capital Universe; History Universes, including Access to African American
Studies, Access to Women's Studies and Access to Presidential Studies; and Statistical
Universe continue to be available.
Dialog and OVID Online
Also due in June are Dialog and OVID Online pay-as-you-go renewals. In the past, a contract
checklist has been included in the prepayment packet libraries receive from BCR each May.
This year, library staff can also complete the contract checklist online. Dialog and OVID are
renewed automatically, but staff need to fill out the form each year so BCR stays informed of
changes in institution information or changes libraries want in their respective accounts. The
form is located at:
www.bcr.org/~ids/Reference/contract_checklist.html.
Dialog is a broad spectrum of more than 450 databases with 330 million articles,
abstracts, citations and full-text of more than 2,500 journals, magazines and newspapers.
Emphasis is on news, business, science and technology. Financial profiles and
background information are provided on more than 12 million U.S. and 1 million
international companies.
OVID provides information for medical, academic and scientific markets. Subscribers have
access to more than 80 health, medicine, business and scientific databases.
Britannica and Grolier
BCR's Britannica subscription period is June 1-May 31. The last day current subscribers
can renew is May 31, 2002. Britannica Online continues to be available, and Britannica
has announced three new products: Britannica Online School Edition, Webster's Third
New International Dictionary and Annals of American History Online.
Libraries that have not yet renewed their subscriptions to Grolier (subscription year April
1-March 31), need to do so immediately to reactivate access. Encyclopedia Americana,
Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia, New Book of Knowledge, America The Beautiful,
Cumbre en línea, Lands and Peoples Online and Popular Science continue to be
available.
