OCLC Update
By Regan W. Harper
NetLibrary MARC Records Procedure Revised
OCLC has initiated two changes
related to OCLC MARC records for netLibrary titles:
- OCLC TechPro staff are now cataloging all new netLibrary titles.
- All MARC record distribution for netLibrary titles is now through OCLC.
- The OCLC Principles and Guidelines for Use of Records has been added to the
netLibrary access contract. When a library orders netLibrary titles, netLibrary
will send the matching OCLC Control Numbers (OCCNs) to OCLC, and the
MARC records will be returned to netLibrary for the library to pick up.
The key components remain the same. The cost of the OCLC MARC records continues
to be bundled in the netLibrary Content Support Services fee. Librarians may pick up the
records from the netLibrary server or obtain records through WorldCat Collection Sets.
If the library requires special editing through the batch process, OCLC will review the
requirements and a customized charge may apply. The library/network will be notified
before processing begins. Susan Walker remains your contact for consortial groups that
wish to set up a WorldCat Collections Set as their way of receiving MARC records.

Connexion Installation Affects Record Export
The most recent installation (August) of
the OCLC Connexion service brought two changes to record export. The changes should
improve your ability to import OCLC-MARC records into your local systems.
- A space is now being added to the 001 field to extend its length to 13 characters,
bringing it in line with Passport export.
- All blank call number fields (090, 092, 096, 055, 070, 080, 085) are being
removed from records during export. This affects all local systems that have
experienced problems handling blank call number fields.
According to OCLC, these changes should resolve problems some libraries have reported
when staff imports records from Connexion, including those related to importing files of
multiple records.
