BCR Staff Preparing
for Fall Library Conferences
BCR staff members are looking forward to attending the library conferences scheduled
this fall throughout the BCR region. Conferences are scheduled in Hawaii, Wyoming,
Idaho, Nevada, Iowa and Colorado.
Wyoming The Wyoming Library Association annual conference is September 19-20
in Casper. Ann Schwab, member services librarian, will attend from BCR. She will
present two programs. The "BCR Network Update" is scheduled from 2-3:30 p.m.,
Thursday, September 19. Attendees will gain a more complete understanding of the
services BCR provides, from training, to product discounts, to OCLC services. Schwab
also will present "My Friend MARC" from 4-5:30 p.m. that same day. Catalogers use
MARC to create bibliographic records. Copy catalogers edit or add data to existing
records. Schwab will instruct participants in how to strengthen the database and improve
indexing so library staff and patrons can have better search results.
Hawaii BCR Executive Director Dave Brunell will travel to Ko Olina on the island of
Oahu September 27-28, for the 2002 Hawaii Library Association annual conference. He
will present the program, "The Library as a Place in Cyberspace," from 11:30 a.m.-12:30
p.m., Friday, September 27. The session will look at some of the techniques and services
librarians are using to reproduce the look and feel of the local library in their online
services. Discussion topics will include: some basic features of a user friendly library
Web site; interactive, online reference services; customized e-book collections and
library branding issues and opportunities.
Idaho Ellen Fox, manager of BCR's Research & Development (R&D), will represent
BCR at the Idaho Library Association annual conference scheduled October 2-5, in
Boise. She will present "New Developments with E-books" from 10-11:45 a.m. on
Friday, October 4. The session is an overview of what's new with e-books, including
pricing models, delivery mechanisms and directions in content development.
Nevada The Nevada Library Association annual conference is scheduled October 2-5,
in Ely with Rosario Garza, assistant director for Member Services (MSD), representing
BCR. She will present "Cost-effective Acquisition and Use of E-book Collections" on
Saturday, October 5, from 12:30-1:25 p.m. The session is a discussion of the major
factors impacting the cost of acquiring electronic books and an explanation of several
methods utilized to expand the use of e-books in academic and public libraries.
Iowa Iowa librarians will gather in Des Moines October 9-11, for the Iowa Library
Association 2002 annual conference. BCR's Rosario Garza will travel from Nevada to
Iowa where she will participate in two ILA programs. The "BCR Network Update" is
scheduled from 11:30 a.m.-12:25 p.m., Friday, October 11. Garza also will participate in
"Z39.5 Connectivity: Blessing or Curse?" sponsored by Resource and Technical Services
and Information Technology Forum.
Colorado Linda Gonzalez, member services librarian, will join Executive Director
Dave Brunell at the Colorado Library Association annual conference October 16-20, at
Keystone Resort. Brunell will present "Optimizing the Use and Purchase of E-books"
from 3-4 p.m. on Saturday, October 19. Participants will be able to use the information
provided to increase the use levels of e-book resources by their patrons and make more
informed decisions about e-book purchases.
Gonzalez will participate in two programs. She will present the preconference session,
"CONSER Electronic Serials Cataloging," from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday, October 17.
This hands-on course will provide training for cataloging e-serials distributed through the
Web. It is offered in cooperation with the Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training
Program (SCCTP). Gonzalez also will be a panelist for "Changing Concept of Seriality"
from 4:30-5:30 p.m., Saturday, October 19.
Exhibit Booth BCR will set up a booth in the exhibit area at each of the library
conferences. Please stop by to ask questions, learn about the many services BCR has
