Oxford Acquires Grove Dictionaries

The Macmillan Group has sold to Oxford University Press (OUP) two of its flagship Grove publications, The Grove Dictionary of Art and New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. Officials from both companies say they are working together to ensure a smooth transition.

BCR member libraries will continue to obtain their discount subscriptions to both online databases — The Grove Dictionary of Art Online and The New Grove Dictionary of Music Online — through BCR. Staff who have questions also should continue to contact BCR's Laura Chittivej (lchittiv@bcr.org).

The two Grove dictionaries fit well with OUP's other leading products, the Oxford English Dictionary, American National Biography, Oxford Reference Online and the forthcoming Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. Together they form a collection of valuable reference works that have a history in print and have moved successfully to online format.

OUP officials have assured BCR that service for both products will continue uninterrupted to our member libraries. Access procedures are not changing. Oxford will continue to nurture the scholarship of the two reference works, officials said.
