OCLC Update
By Regan W. Harper
MARS Now Offers Getty's AAT
The OCLC MARC Record service (MARS) has been enhanced to include the option of automated
authority control using Getty's Art & Architecture Thesaurus (AAT). Using MARS and AAT, libraries,
museums and archives can leverage the investments they made in their existing collections by providing
better access to materials and increasing circulation. MARS and AAT help you make your current
collection work harder. For more information, see www.bcr.org/~bss/oclccat.html.
To learn about the new authority control options, contact BCR's Linda Gonzalez (lgonzale@bcr.org).
PromptCat Now Provides Any Juvenile Prefix
For several years, OCLC PromptCat has been able to provide only a small j before the Dewey call number
for items ordered as juvenile materials. This has recently been expanded. PromptCat can now provide any
juvenile prefix you profile to the front of the Dewey call number for juvenile materials. The prefix can be
up to five letters. This gives PromptCat the ability to add Y, YA, Juv, Young or any other five-letter prefix
used at your library.
For more information about PromptCat, contact Linda Gonzalez at BCR.
Matthews Medical Books Provides Shelf-ready PromptCat Materials
Matthews Medical Books is the first OCLC PromptCat medical vendor to offer shelf-ready processing.
Matthews can:
- Affix PromptCat pocket cards/labels.
- Affix PromptCat spine labels.
- Affix security strips.
- Affix pre-printed bar codes.
- Stamp materials with the library's name.
OCLC and Matthews Medical Books work together to provide the OCLC PromptCat service with
automated copy cataloging from WorldCat for the materials you purchase from Matthews. And when
Matthews' physical processing is combined with the PromptCat service, the books arrive at your library
shelf-ready.
The OCLC PromptCat service offers many options that can be customized to suit the local needs of medical
and health science libraries. Library staff can opt to receive only NLM records (with Cat Source: NLM).
PromptCat can move the NLM call number to a local field and create spine and pocket labels for NLM call
numbers. Library holdings are automatically set in WorldCat.
See the OCLC Web (www.oclc.org/oclc/menu/prompt.htm) site for more information on the OCLC
PromptCat service or contact Linda Gonzalez at BCR.
Migrating from NAD to New Interlibrary Loan Policies Directory
Effective August 24, ILL policies will no longer reside in the Name-Address Directory (NAD). Instead
ILL Web will search the new ILL Policies Directory and no longer link to the NAD. BCR encourages
libraries to enter ILL policies, contacts and site information into the new ILL Policies Directory as soon as
possible. ILL Policies Directory is available directly within ILL Web and in OCLC ILLiad. The policies
directory can also be accessed directly at illpolicies.oclc.org.
For assistance creating ILL Policy Directory entries, see the following OCLC documentation:
BCR has also created some support facilities to help kick-start your migration process. These include:
- BCR Policies Directory Web Support Tool: www.bcr.org/~bss/pdtips.html.
- OCLC ILL Policies Directory Workshop: This workshop will be offered September 24,
1-4 p.m. at the BCR offices.
For more information about the ILL Policies Directory or the free workshop, contact Ann Schwab
(aschwab@bcr.org) at BCR.
