BCR's Grolier Group Subscription
Enhanced with New Databases

By Laura Chittivej

BCR is pleased to offer two new online databases as part of the Grolier group subscription. Encyclopedia of American Studies and Columbia American History Online are both available as add-on databases to new and current subscribers at prorated prices. New subscribers must select either the Combo or Deluxe package to qualify for an add-on database purchase. Pricing and ordering information are available at www.bcr.org/reference/Grolier/grol-Menu.html.

Encyclopedia of American Studies
Published under the sponsorship of the American Studies Association and written for high school and college students, the Encyclopedia of American Studies reflects the interdisciplinary nature of American studies, incorporating American history, literature and many other disciplines in a cultural study of the American experience. At the core of the Encyclopedia of American Studies database are approximately 680 individual articles covering various aspects of American culture, both historical and contemporary, from gospel music to hip-hop, literature to reality television, the Civil War to September 11, 2001.

BCR and Grolier are also offering an ADA compliant version of Encyclopedia of American Studies. The text of this text-only version is identical to that of the graphical edition.

Noteworthy features of the Encyclopedia of American Studies include links to related sites, both internal and external; biographies; an alphabetical listing of articles; a bibliography of additional sources with each article; and more than 500 photographs and maps.

Columbia American History Online
An interactive, Web-based resource in American history, Columbia American History Online was developed by faculty and staff at Columbia University. It combines e-seminars, taught by Columbia faculty, with original historic documents, thought-provoking questions, classroom simulations recreating historic periods, interactive maps, audio slide presentations and more.

The e-seminars are three- to five-hour learning experiences that combine images, video and a variety of other media to provide an in-depth look at some of the most popular history courses at Columbia. They span a wide range of events, periods and themes in American history, as well as a broad spectrum of contemporary historical scholarship. An assortment of curricular materials accompanies selected e-seminars.

BCR's Grolier group subscription begins May 1 and ends April 30 annually. Midyear subscribers are welcome, and the fees are prorated to correspond with the end of the subscription year, April 30.
