A number of people on staff at BCR member libraries were named among the "Movers & Shakers 2003" by Library Journal. In Colorado: Jose Aponte, Pikes Peak Library District and Phyllis Larison, Bemis Public Library. In Kansas: Kaite Mediatore, Kansas City Public Library. In Nevada: Dani Porter, University of Nevada, Las Vegas and Marcelino Ugalde, University of Nevada, Reno. In Oregon: Donna Reed, Multnomah County Library. In Washington: Brian Kamens, Tacoma Public Library. In Wyoming: Amelia J. Shelley, Laramie County Library.

Teri Switzer, assistant director for human resources and budget at Auraria Library in Denver, has been elected treasurer of the American Library Association (ALA). Dawn Vaugn, library media specialist at Cherry Creek (Colorado) High School, is president- elect of the American Association of School Librarians, a branch of ALA.

The Oregon Library Association has named Janet Webster Librarian of the Year for 2003. She is head of the Marilyn Potts Guin Library, Hatfield Science Center, Oregon State University.

Ruth Metz was named interim director of libraries at the Multnomah County (Oregon) Library. Benjamin Wakashige is leaving his New Mexico state librarian post to become the new library director at Pacific University in Oregon.

Jeannette Woodward is the new director of the Fremont County (Wyoming) Library.

Ken Nail, Jr. has been appointed Alaska state archivist.

Las Vegas-Clark County (Nevada) Library District is one of nine libraries to win a 2003 John Cotton Dana Library Public Relations Award.

In Colorado, the Arapahoe Library District opened a new Smoky Hill Branch March 1. The 42,000 square-foot Tuscan-style building features a computer training room, fireplace reading area, outdoor porches, indoor courtyard, in addition to its collections, teen area and children's library. The Arapahoe Library District also redesigned its Castlewood Branch as an Xpress Library; books, magazines and media are all displayed in a retail-like setting. In a January grand opening, the Simla Branch of the Elbert County Library District moved into a new facility that nearly tripled its library space.

The Kelver Branch in Byers (Colorado), Arapahoe Library District, is one of five winners of ALA's A&E-sponsored Benedict Arnold: A Question of Honor creative display contest. The library received a $1,000 grant.

Haines (Alaska) Borough Public Library received the EBSCO Excellence in Small and/or Rural Public Library Service Award.

Platteville (Colorado) Public Library received the Highsmith Library Innovation Award for its Panther Express project.
