The State Library of Iowa is celebrating is 165th anniversary this year. A celebration was held September 24.

Jo Ann Schindler has been appointed acting Hawaii state librarian.

Gerald Buttars has been named interim director of the Utah State Library.

The Colorado Digitization Program, Colorado State Library and Colorado Historical Society received a LSTA grant to begin digitizing Colorado's historic newspapers (1859-1880).

Member Libraries Get High Ratings
A number of BCR member libraries were rated among the top 10 libraries in their population categories in the 2003 Hennen's American Public Library Ratings. They include:

Washoe County (Nevada) Library System opened the new $3.7 million South Valleys Library.

Vacant grocery stores never die; they become new libraries. At least in Douglas County, Colorado, and Boise, Idaho. The Douglas Public Library District purchased a vacant Safeway building two years ago and opened the newly renovated Phillip S. Miller Library in September. The Boise Public Library followed suit. Renovation of its former grocery building is expected to be completed by late summer 2004.

Robert Depp is the new director of the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Public Library in Broomfield, Colorado.

Lori Phillips is the new associate dean of libraries at the University of Wyoming.

Diana Skousen has been appointed the new county librarian for the Summit County (Utah) Library.
