New Preservation Education Video AvailableBy Rosario GarzaA new video illustrating the potential risks to your collections and the best practices you can use in examining your institution's policies for preserving general and special collections materials has been released. Developed by the Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC), Amigos Library Services and OCLC, the presentation is available in either VHS or DVD format. Production was funded, in part, by a National Leadership Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. "The Preservation Survey: A First Step in Saving Your Collectionsz" is a valuable tool for setting long- and short-term goals for protecting the varied collections of cultural heritage institutions. It demonstrates tools and methods of assessment and follows a staff surveyor as he examines a building's exterior, as well as the materials stored within. Viewers can observe the process while learning to apply the practices to their own situations. This 30-minute video was produced to accompany the NEDCC publication, Assessing Preservation Needs: A Self Study Guide. The video is available from Amigos Library Services at a cost of $40 for VHS and $50 for DVD. Shipping costs are included. Organizations can pay via a check payable to Amigos Library Services or by MasterCard or Visa. An online order form is available at www.amigos.org/video_form.html. If you also wish to acquire the print NEDCC publication that accompanies the video, it is available from the NEDCC. You can view it online at www.nedcc.org/selfsurvey/survman.htm. A spiral-bound version is available for $15, shipping costs included. The NEDCC accepts checks only. The online order form for the print booklet is available at www.nedcc.org/pubs/apnord.htm. BCR has one copy of the video in VHS available for loan to interested institutions. If you want to view it before purchasing, send an ILL request (preferably via OCLC) to BCR.
