BCR to Offer New Oxford
Scholarship Online Group Subscription

By Laura Chittivej

Oxford University Press is launching a new reference service, Oxford Scholarship Online. This addition to the Oxford University Press online subscription databases will be available to BCR member libraries in November. Libraries may request a 30-day free trial at www.oup-usa.org/networkfreetrials. Oxford University Press will notify trial subscribers via e-mail when the trial is activated. BCR group subscription pricing and ordering information will be available in November.

Oxford Scholarship Online is a new electronic strategy for dissemination of and access to scholarship in the social sciences and humanities. The complete text of more than 700 recently published, classic Oxford monographs have been collected in this new service. They are fully cross-searchable, with keywords and book and chapter abstracts especially prepared for each title. At least 200 new titles will be added each year.

Oxford Scholarship Online consists of four modules covering the following disciplines: philosophy, religion, political science, economics and finance. Each module contains the full text of approximately 250 titles from the core backlist in that discipline. The selected titles have been chosen, reviewed and approved by scholars widely acknowledged as experts in their respective disciplines.

For each title, chapter abstracts and keywords have been written - by the original author whenever possible. The abstracts and keywords are forwarded to abstracting and keyword services such as Ingenta Journals, EBSCO, ProQuest and OCLC. This enables researchers to find information contained in a chapter of a book the same way they would find information contained in a journal article.

Current BCR Oxford University Press subscribers should also look for the upcoming release of Oxford Reference Online: Premium Collection (ORO), in November. With access to all of the ready reference content in The Core Collection, ORO Premium will provide an additional 50,000-plus articles from the Oxford Companions and the complete 20,000 entries in the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations. Enhanced search features are also available to Premium subscribers.

To find out more about Oxford Scholarship Online, upgrading your current ORO subscription or obtaining a new subscription to any Oxford University Press database, please contact BCR's Laura Chittivej (lchittiv@bcr.org) for more information.
