OCLC FirstSearch News
OCLC has announced it will no longer maintain the MDX Health Digest database on FirstSearch after
December 14. This comes as a result of the decision by Medical Data Exchange to discontinue production
of the database. For libraries that are currently using MDX Health Digest on a per-search basis, alternative
databases such as Consumers Index, FactSearch, MEDLINE, Periodical Abstracts and Wilson Select Plus
are good choices for information on health and medical topics. The Philosopher's Index database (see
below), covers the subject of medical ethics. NetLibrary also has an extensive collection of electronic
books on medicine.
OCLC is scheduled to add The Philosopher's Index database to the OCLC FirstSearch service. The
database, produced by the Philosopher's Information Center, includes more than 550 journals in all fields of
philosophy. It contains citations and abstracts for journal articles, books and anthologies published from
1940 to the present and is updated quarterly. The database will be available via subscription.
For more information on pricing and subscriptions for any of the above database products, contact BCR's
