Digitized Newspaper Collection Expands

Colorado's Historic Newspaper Collection, a joint endeavor of the Collaborative Digitization Program (CDP), Colorado Historical Society and Colorado State Library, has expanded to provide access to more than 50 newspapers from Colorado's past. The collection is accessible free at www.cdpheritage.org/newspapers/. Full-page images of the newspapers are available and their full text is searchable by anyone with Internet access.

"For the first time, people can search for events in all 51 newspapers at the same time and compare coverage of events," said Brenda Bailey-Hainer, project manager for the collection. Bailey-Hainer also is a member of the BCR Board of Trustees.

The digitized collection was created using Olive software and funded by two grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Library Services and Technology Act. Additional contributions from Colorado libraries and museums have enabled the expansion of the collection with new titles added monthly.

The newspapers in the collection date from 1859 to 1923 and were published in 23 cities and 18 counties around Colorado. Among recent additions are the Colorado Antelope, an early women's suffrage paper, and La Voz del Valle, a Spanish-language paper from Antonito published at the turn of the 20th century. Others include the Western Mountaineer, Rocky Mountain News, Daily Mining Journal, Littleton Gazette and two German-language newspapers.

BCR has formed a partnership with the Collaborative Digitization Program that brings CDP digitization workshops to library staff through BCR's regular training program. See BCR's Web site (www.bcr.org/training/workshops/CDP-workshops.html) for more information.
