BCR and NNLM - MidContinental Region
Work to Provide Shared Access to PIER
By Ellen Fox
Members of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine - MidContinental Region consortium are
partnering with BCR to gain shared access to the American College of Physicians' PIER database. PIER
(Physicians Information and Education Resource) was developed to provide rapid point-of-care information
delivery on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. It is an authoritative, up-to-date resource for
information on diseases, medical procedures, screening and prevention techniques, alternative medicines, as
well as legal and ethical issues pertaining to the practice of medicine. Participants in this group purchase
will share access to the PIER database for $300 per library.
This group purchase is currently limited to libraries that are members of the NNLM - MidContinental
Region consortium. However, membership in the NNLM - MidContinental Region is free and easy to
obtain for libraries that provide medical information to their clients and are located in Colorado, Utah,
Wyoming, Kansas, Nebraska or Missouri. Information on how to join the NNLM network can be found at
www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/factsheets/nnlmem.html#eligible.
If your library is already a member of the
NNLM - MidContinental Region, you can participate in the group purchase of PIER by submitting the
subscription form on the BCR Web site at www.bcr.org/reference/acppier.html. For more information
about the NNLM - MidContinental Region consortium, you may contact Barbara Jones at
