OCLC Update

By Regan W. Harper
WorldCat Resource Sharing Quick Reference
An eight-page WorldCat Resource Sharing Quick Reference guide has been designed by OCLC. Print copies of the guide are available on request at no charge. Send your request to orders@oclc.org and include the product code: REF1101.

This publication is also found online in PDF format at www.oclc.org/support/documentation/resourcesharing/using/refcard/WCRS.pdf. An HTML version is also available at: www.oclc.org/support/documentation/resourcesharing/default.htm.

Moving Resource Sharing Statistics
All OCLC resource sharing statistics have been moved from Product Services Web to OCLC Usage Statistics at: www.stats.oclc.org. This includes:

  • ILL Fee Management Program Borrower Report
  • ILL Fee Management Program Lender Report
  • ILL Borrower Reasons For No Report
  • ILL Lender Reasons For No Report
  • Borrower ILL Management Stats Report
  • Lender ILL Management Stats Report
  • Strategic Union List Report
  • Borrower Overview Report
  • Lender Overview Report
  • Borrower Detail Report
  • Lender Detail Report

Some larger reports have been divided into multiple documents, and reports that OCLC staff believe are no longer valid after July were not moved and will be discontinued. All reports are available to all users of OCLC Resource Sharing via resource sharing authorization and password. The reports may be exported into Microsoft Excel.

OCLC will not add any ILL reports to Product Services Web after the reports for June 2005. Reports posted for June will be available for 90 days from the day posted.

Terminologies Pilot Begins
The OCLC Terminologies Pilot is up and running. This service would provide access to multiple controlled vocabularies to help staff in libraries, museums and archives create consistent metadata for their collections. Selected mappings between vocabularies are provided to assist in relating terminology. The service would provide one-stop access to terminology resources and would be accessible through any Web- based metadata editor.

Information about the pilot is available on the OCLC Web site at www.oclc.org/productworks/terminologiespilot.htm. The Web page has a list of terminologies used in the pilot, links to the terminologies on the OCLC Office of Research Terminologies Services Web site and instructions for the Connexion client and browser. Note that the link to the actual terminologies is only available to pilot participants.

American Heritage Center at University of Wyoming and Iowa State University Library, both BCR member libraries, are participating in the pilot. Other participating institutions are Houston Academy of Medicine - Texas Medical Center Library, Rush University Medical Center, State University of New York at Buffalo, Tulane Medical Library, University of the Pacific Library and University of California, Davis.

For more information about the pilot, visit the Web site or contact Susan Westberg (susan_westberg@oclc.org) at OCLC .

Connexion Client 1.40 Released Connexion client version 1.40 is now available. Client 1.40 includes a spell check, offline validation, additional non-English interfaces, Hebrew, Greek and Cyrillic script cataloging, access to the Chinese Name Authority File and more. See www.oclc.org/connexion/interface/client/enhancements/recent.htm to read more about the changes and to download the software.

In some cases, when updating to version 1.40, the upgrade installation might fail with a message asking for the path to your Connexion.msi file. To resolve this problem, download and run the Windows Installer Cleanup utility which can be found at support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=290301. Please review the Update the Connexion client section of the getting started document at www.oclc.org/support/documentation/connexion/client/gettingstarted/#updateclient.fm prior to upgrading.

OCLC will discontinue client 1.30 on December 1. At that time, you will no longer be able to log on with client 1.30. OCLC expects to release client 1.50 in November, so client 1.30 users can wait for 1.50 instead of upgrading to 1.40. However, OCLC recommends that you upgrade to 1.40 to have the latest software changes.

Client 1.40 changes include:

  • Spell check
  • Offline validation
  • Local file sort
  • Local accessions list
  • Batch searching and processing enhancements
  • Access WebDewey
  • Access OCLC Usage Statistics
  • Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional) and Japanese interfaces
  • Arabic script align-right option
  • Hebrew, Cyrillic and Greek script cataloging
  • Access to the Chinese Name Authority File
  • Problem resolutions
  • Resolutions to several reported problems as listed in the Known Problems document at www.oclc.org/connexion/support/client_known_problems.htm.
