Grove Art Online Updates
OCLC FirstSearch News OCLC has implemented links to Biblio.com, one of the world's largest suppliers of used, rare and out-of-print books, from the WorldCat database on the OCLC FirstSearch service. Once this feature is enabled through the Linking section of the FirstSearch administrative module at firstsearch.oclc.org/admin/, WorldCat users will be able to link from the detailed record of a book searched in WorldCat to the Biblio.com Web site to purchase that item. Additionally, when a book is not currently available on Biblio.com, users will be linked to library holdings in WorldCat through the Open WorldCat program, making records of library-owned materials in WorldCat available to Web searchers. New indexes in FirstSearch WorldCat are replacing the Union Lists of Periodicals database. The WorldCat database on FirstSearch and WorldCat Resource Sharing replicate the functionality provided by the separate FirstSearch Union Lists of Periodicals database on FirstSearch. Users of the current Union Lists of Periodicals database should begin using WorldCat on FirstSearch or WorldCat Resource Sharing to search for current local holdings information. OCLC no longer will be updating the Union Lists of Periodicals database and will discontinue offering it on FirstSearch effective June 12. Per-search users will continue to be charged for use of the Union Lists of Periodicals database up until the time it is removed from the FirstSearch service. Since April, OCLC has issued credits to subscribers to the database since the database is not being updated. The new indexes are listed in the dropdown search box in the Expert search screen and are documented at the end of the WorldCat Index Labels and Examples help screen. While they are listed in the expert screen, the index label and search term(s) may also be entered in any search box in the basic and advanced search screen. The new indexes in WorldCat are:
New indexes and a new subfield for indicating library holdings are also supported via Z39.50 OCLC FirstSearch. The information on the new indexes is provided in the documentation for the WorldCat database at www.oclc.org/support/documentation/firstsearch/z3950/z3950_databases/specs/worldcat.htm. In addition, a new MARC subfield has been added to the full MARC record display. Now the 947 subfield s indicates that the library symbol (the one related to the FirstSearch authorization number) has holdings on this item in WorldCat. A Y will indicate yes, and N will indicate no. For more information, contact BCR's Rosario Garza (rgarza@bcr.org) or Linda Gonzalez (lgonzale@bcr.org).
