A number of BCR member libraries were rated among the top 10 libraries in their population categories in the 2004 Hennen's American Public Library Ratings (HAPLR). They are: Colorado's Denver Public Library, Douglas County Libraries, Silverton Public Library; Iowa's North Liberty Community Library, James Kennedy Public Library, Conrad Public Library, Riceville Public Library; Kansas' Johnson County Library, Morton County Library, Seneca Falls Library, Hardtner Public Library; Oregon's Lake Oswego Public Library; Utah's Salt Lake County Library System, Salt Lake City Public Library, Mount Pleasant Public Library; Washington's Chewelah Public Library. Jefferson County Public Library, Boulder Public Library and San Miguel Library District #1/Telluride (Colorado); Kansas City Kansas Public Library; Salem Public Library (Oregon); and Tacoma Public Library (Washington) were among the top libraries in electronic-resource use.

The Western Folklife Center (Nevada) is a winner of one of seven 2004 National Awards for Museum and Library Service from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Judy Green, University of Alaska, Anchorage, Consortium Library, and Maria Anna Jankowska, University of Idaho, each received a Fulbright Scholar Award for 2004-2005.

Sherry Crow, Colorado Springs School District #11, was named Librarian of the Year for 2004 and Dolores Public Library, Library of the Year, by the Colorado Association of School Libraries.

Jeanine Reid is the new executive director of the Weld (Colorado) Library District. Also in Colorado, Linda Tuttle-Shaw was named director of the Elbert County Library District and Debbi MacLeod, director of the Colorado Talking Book Library.

Danielle Krol has been named the new library director of the Mid-Columbia (Washington) Library District.

In Iowa, the Drake Public Library selected Mary E. Austin as its new director, and Tammy Snyder was named the new librarian at the Blakesburg Public Library. Kim Kietzman was appointed director of the new LeClaire Community Library. Jim Kapoun was appointed the new library director at Waldorf College.

James Jeffrey, Denver Public Library, received the Filby Award for Outstanding Genealogical Librarianship.

The library at Montana Tech, University of Montana celebrated its 100th birthday in December 2004.
