Winners of ALA-related Honors Named
It's the time of year that the American Library Association and its various member units honor librarians throughout the country. Individuals on the staff of a number of BCR member libraries are again among the award recipients.

  • Georgia Lynn Lomax, new deputy director of Pierce County Library System, Tacoma, Washington, and for the previous 12 years managing librarian of the King County Library System, Auburn, Washington, has received the Allie Beth Martin award from the Public Library Association.
  • Joseph W. Janes, associate dean for academics, The Information School at the University of Washington, is the recipient of the Isadore Gilbert Mudge-R.R. Bowker Award presented by the Reference and User Services Association. Janes is founding director of the Internet Public Library and "Internet Librarian" columnist for American Libraries.
  • Carlene Engstrom, library director of the D'Arcy McNickle Library, Salish Kootenai College (Montana) is among those selected this year to receive the Association of College and Research Libraries Harvard Leadership Institute scholarships.
  • Johnson County (Kansas) Library's Outreach Services Department is the 2006 recipient of the Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies (ASCLA) Exceptional Services Award for its services to populations needing unique services.
  • Keith Curry Lance, director of Library Research Services at the Colorado State Library, as well as affiliated professor in the Library and Information Science Program at the University of Denver, was presented with the ASCLA Leadership Achievement Award for his work in library statistics and service evaluation.
  • Gary Frost, conservator at the University of Iowa Libraries and instructor at the UI School of Library and Information Science and the Iowa Center for the Book, received the 2006 Paul Banks & Carolyn Harris Preservation Award for his research into historical and modern book structures.

State Marketing Campaign, Logo Recognized
Marketing efforts of Montana and Wyoming libraries were honored by their local American Advertising Federation. In February Barnhart Communications was presented with a gold ADDY Award in Elements of Advertising for the new logo the agency created for Wyoming Libraries, a program of the Wyoming Library Association. The Montana State Library's "What's Your Story?" campaign was recognized with a gold Addy. It's "Xtreme Research" poster, targeted at teens, received a bronze Addy.

Utah's Pioneer Online Library Celebrates
PioneerUtah's Online Library, is celebrating its 10th birthday this spring. Ten years ago the Utah State Library Division, Utah State Office of Education and Utah Academic Library Consortium partnered to form Pioneer. The online library provides Utah's residents with free online access to magazines, journals, newspapers, encyclopedia, maps, pictures and multimedia clips.

Other Member News
Nancy Bolt, who retired last year as the Colorado State Librarian, was honored by the Colorado Association of Libraries with its Career Achievement Award. The award recognized her role as an advocate for libraries and library users over her 18 years on the job.

Johnson County (Kansas) Library is the Kansas winner of the 2006 NCLIS Health Award for Libraries for its JoCoHealth.net Partnership providing county residents with current, reliable health information.

The Board of Trustees of Clearwater County (Idaho) Free Library District has hired Lori Bonner as the new director of the Weippe Public Library.

Paula Miller is the new director of the Pikes Peak (Colorado) Library District.

Pat Partove, who since last August has served as interim director of the Spokane (Washington) Public Library, has been named the library's director.

Chugach Optional School, Anchorage (Alaska) School District, dedicated its newly remodeled building, the showcase of which is the library, which provides a panoramic view of the Chugach Mountains.
