OCLC Update
By Regan W. Harper
Local Holdings Maintenance Guide Available
The OCLC Local Holdings Maintenance Quick Reference Guide is now available. The online version is available in HTML format at:
www.oclc.org/support/documentation/localholdings/quickref/ and in PDF format at
www.oclc.org/support/documentation/localholdings/quickref/lhm_quickref.pdf.
This eight-page reference guide provides the basic information you need to maintain accurate, current holdings information for your library. It supports inter- library loan by providing your library's holdings for materials in any format, including serials. By making all aspects of the collection known, it also supports collection development.
The quick reference guide is divided into sections:
Overview
Local holdings in Connexion browser
Find local holdings records
Edit local holdings records
Create local holdings records
Create and apply LH constant data
Delete local holdings records
Local holdings record fields: definitions and guidelines
Local holdings and resource sharing
LHR text editing techniques
Additional documentation on OCLC's Local Holdings Maintenance can be found at: www.oclc.org/support/documentation/localholdings/default.htm. If you would like a no-charge copy of the print version of the Local Holdings Maintenance Quick Reference guide, please send an e-mail request to orders@oclc.org and ask for product code REF1112.
Libraries Asked to Participate in Potential Comparisons
BCR and OCLC, along with the other regional service providers across the United States, are asking member libraries to opt in to the
possibility of a one-to-one comparison by OCLC's WorldCat Collection Analysis (WCA) subscribers.
OCLC's WorldCat Collection Analysis (WCA) service provides subscribing libraries with comparisons of their collection against those of other libraries. Subscribers can compare against a group or against a single library. If a library does a group comparison, the results do not identify the individual library's information. However, when the library compares itself against a single library, the partner library's holdings are identifiable. If a library does a one-to-one comparison, the subscribing library currently must get permission from the library it will be comparing itself against. This may result in libraries getting multiple requests for permission to proceed with a one-to-one comparison.
If you agree that your library will participate in a potential WCA one-to-one comparison, as requested by BCR and OCLC, subscribing libraries will be able to do collection analysis against your library's collection without sending the requests for permission. The analysis will be for the subscribing library's own internal use, and the results will not be shared with other institutions.
Please go to www.bcr.org/reference/WCA-permissions.html and complete the form indicating whether you do or do not give permission to have this kind of comparison done.
If you have any questions, please contact Rosario Garza at (800) 397-1552 or rgarza@bcr.org. We thank you in advance for your time and attention to this request.
