Wilson Discounts New Book Review Digest Retrospective
BCR member libraries have an opportunity to purchase H.W. Wilson's new Book Review Digest Retrospective: 1905-1982, at a substantial discount, but they need to act before March 2.

Providing access to a unique record of books and reviews reflecting the ideas that shaped the 20th century, the database covers nearly eight decades of H.W. Wilson's Book Review Digest, with excerpts from and citations to reviews of adult and juvenile fiction and nonfiction. Cheryl LaGuardia, head of instructional services, Harvard College Library has said that, "This file is an essential acquisition for every public, academic, and research library." ("A Bibliophile's Heaven," Library Journal, January 2006)

Highlights include:

  • Coverage of 300,000 books.
  • Citations to more than 1.5 million book reviews.
  • The ability to search on the names of book reviewers.
  • Detailed indexing of more than 500 key English-language popular magazines, newspapers, literary review media and academic journals.
  • Indexing from 78 printed annual volumes, saving space on your library's shelves.
  • Library holdings indicator links to your OPAC.
  • The ability to search simultaneously with Book Review Digest Plus.

It consists of a cumulative index to more than half a million annotated records and is updated every six months. For more information, contact BCR's Karen Graham (kgraham@bcr.org).

Subscribers have several alternative SilverPlatter databases to choose from, including A Matter of Fact, EconLit, International Political Science Abstracts or Social Policy and Practice. NetLibrary Update
NetLibrary announced in November it is the first electronic content provider to offer academic, public, special and school library users access to more than 100,000 full-text e-book and electronic audiobook titles. More than 20,000 new titles were added in 2005 alone. NetLibrary's catalog includes the latest information technology titles, reference essentials, business and economics resources, best-selling fiction titles and much more.

NetLibrary collections now can be set up to provide users with remote access if they already have a NetLibrary account or if they have enabled remote authentication. Several options are available including secure referring URL; IP address recognition through proxy server; or NetLibrary user account. Once remote authentication is set up, users can search for and view e-books and preview e-audiobooks without coming into the physical library.

Contact BCR's Laura Chittivej (lchittve@bcr.org) for more information on both NetLibrary e-books and digital audiobooks.
